  Rendering MPG and AVI files

  Does Vegas Studio re-encode MPG files?

  If the project uses:

  1) only MPG files,
  2) MPG and AVI files

  and the desired output is MPG, will the MPG files in the project be encoded again and result in a loss of quality? If yes, is there any difference in the above two cases?

  I know we should not edit MPG files, but if I am not editing video but only adding/replacing the audio or overlaying MPG video with either MPG or AVI video, do I stand to lose quality even if the desired output is MPG?

  Your help and advice will be highly appreciated.

  MPEG will always be decompressed and recompressed upon rendering. DV-AVI will be COPIED. That’s why you should use DV instead of MPEG.

  Just one more question. So, MPG files will always be decompressed and recompressed whereas AVI files will be just copied even if the desired output format is MPG?

  No. Going from DV-AVI to DV-AVI, the file will be COPIED unless you’ve added an effect or made some other change. When going from any format to MPEG, every frame will always be compressed.
