Newbie – system hangs after just a few entries
OK – I admit that I am not too far from being right out of the box with this software, so please forgive me if my situation seems obvious.
I have old slides that my dad took that I want to burn to a DVD. I have a ton of 4 mega-pixel slides and I want to add a sound track. Right now I am just experimenting but here’s what happens…. I drag a cd track into the music time-line & it plays just fine. I drag a single slide into the video timeline (fade in, fade out) and it works just fine. I drag a second slide into the timeline, still ok. I drag a 3rd and everything slows way down and eventually hangs. I have to “cntl-alt-delete” to end the program (which itself takes several minutes) and no matter what I do from there I am faced with latch-up and eventually a hard-boot.
Any reccomendations? I have downloaded patch 6.0a but not 6.0d (yet).

First thing to do is to get the latest patches and install them although your problem sounds like it lies elsewhere.
What are your machine specs – this will help a lot in analysing where your problem is.

It has been a frustrating few days to say the least. I downloaded all the patches, reviewed what software I was loading that would consume resources, cleaned up my registry, yada yada yada… but nothing worked.
I decided to take a step back and try the same process with pictures off of my digital camera and low & behold it worked just fine. However, when I went back to the scanned slides it would hang up again?!?!? So then I tried it with scanned photos and it worked fine again. After playing with multiple combinations of still images & music I have concluded that it has something to do with the way I scanned in the slides.
I am going to re-scan everything back in and pay close attention to my setting for these images; it has to be something with this.

Remember that you don’t need to scan them at higher resolution than you’ll use (i.e. the end result is 655×480 at 72dpi). Also, what format are you saving the images in? Some image formats work better than others. I’ve never had problems with JPG, PNG, PSD but you may have problems TIFF (relies on Quicktime for example).

Resolution does not seem to matter too much, but thatnks for the advice. I have always saved as JPG, but that does not seem too be the problem.
I think that the reason is that I originally saved these at 42 bit resolution. When I switched to 24 bit, the problem went away. I think this solved it, but I’ve only scanned in a few images.

For what it’s worth, since I started saving almost all my images as .png files Vegas has been running much faster with less hangups and slow downs.
