Hello everyone, I’ve frequently used this site to troubleshoot issues I’ve had but never needed to register to post one of my own (thanks for making the forums public by the way). I recently upgraded to Win 10 and have been hammering out the issues where they crop up but it has been pretty smooth sailing, until I attempted to open an AVI I recorded after the OS change in Vegas Pro. When I open the file in VLC, I can sucesfuly switch between either audio channel and all seems to be well. However Vegas Pro shows no audio channels when I add the footage, only the single video channel. I have been playing codec bingo all day with no success so I come to CreativeCOW in defeat. Mediainfo shows the AVI video stream as Lagarith which is correct, and the audio as PCM/PCM (two channels). I don’t have the ability to select an audio codec in my recording device or I would attempt something else (recording with MSI Afterburner). Has anyone got any ideas?

I’m going to guess that the problem may be the way that MSI Afterburner is creating the file that Vegas Pro doesn’t like because PCM audio is uncompressed and therefore doesn’t need a codec at all. Vegas Pro should just see it. If MSI Afterburner gives you the option of making a Type 1 or Type 2 AVI file try selecting the other type. I forget which one Vegas Pro likes. It’s been a long time since I worked with AVI files.

You can also try remuxing the file with a program like AviDemux 2.5. Set the video and audio stream to Copy and the output to AVI and it should just copy the streams to a new AVI container with no loss in quality at all. It’s worth a try.

Apart from tackling the issue from the Vegas side, are there any further
PCM Audio output options in MSI Afterburner to try?

Thanks for the help John. MSI does not offer two types of AVI, only AVI or MKV containers. As far as remuxing goes, is the processing time similar to rendering? The file is roughly 60 GB and I would be disappointed to have to band-aid every video capture I work on.

Unfortunately MSI does not offer any audio output options. I prefer MSI as it allows me to capture two audio channels. For some more general information, I opened the file using Blender’s video editor (didn’t realize it had one until troubleshooting yesterday) and an audio channel was present. I have reinstalled Vegas Pro hoping that something was lost in the OS transfer, but to no avail.

I tend to agree that it must be something to do with MSI now that you mention it, as older videos I produced on Win 7 open in Vegas Pro just fine with both audio channels being present.

Well I figured it out, and am almost too ashamed to admit it. I forgot that Vegas Pro 11 doesn’t support multichannel audio tracks, and in my haste I did not ensure that “Downmix multichannel audio to stereo” was selected in Afterburner. I apologize to everyone for the wasted time, and especially to Vegas Pro for ever doubting its sanity.

[John Freeman] “As far as remuxing goes, is the processing time similar to rendering?”

No. It doesn’t process the video or audio at all when you select Copy. It just copies the streams to a new container. It will take as long as it takes to copy 60GB of data to a new file.

Yea, no waste of time at all. We’re here to help and we’re glad you figured it out. My next questions was going to be about MSI recording multiple audio channels and how that is probably the problem. 😉

AVI is listed as one of the supported formats by Sony Vegas Pro. But the problem with AVI is, when you plan to edit the AVI file with Sony Vegas, you may be able to do this, but may be unable to. So what’s the matter? Well, the problem is mainly due to that Windows didn’t come with the codecs that were used for those particular .AVI files(AVI is just a wrapper for a large variety of codecs.)… That’s why Sony Vegas Pro won’t open AVI. If you’re unable to locate your AVI files to Sony Vegas, you could adjust AVI to Sony Vegas compatible formats.
