Avid DNxHD Jagged Text
Hey Folks. I’m running into a problem when I try to render out master Avid DNxHD files for client delivery. In Vegas (13) my text layers are perfectly crisp. However, when I render to Avid DNxHD, they get destroyed. All other small details in the footage looks great in the render. It’s just the text elements. I thought it might be an issue with my quicktime 7, but when I upload to youtube and vimeo, I still see the compressed text issues.
On the flipside, when I render out Sony XAVC (or even a mainconcept mp4), the text retains its sharpness (even when uploaded to web).

Any ideas? The record label uses an ingestion software that requires an .mov master.

First, I don’t see any difference in the title on those two screen shots (sorry)
Second, you didn’t say how you have Avid DNxHD configured. Are you using 220 10-bit? 220 8-bit?, 145 8-bit? 36 8-bit? Try increasing the data rate and/or bit depth and see if that helps.

Sorry, not seeing anything different text wise from the images you
uploaded. Anyway, i dont know of an issue regarding text quality

Yea, I can see it now. I’m not sure what you can do about that. It looks fine in Vegas Pro so it’s gotta be something with the DNxHD codec not handling those sharp edges.

Your master footage on the timeline is what resolution, codec, and bit rate?
Are the text items photoshop overlays, or sony text generator?
Ffmpeg might produce better results, and you can put the dnxhd into mfx container rather than mov.
If you are in 4k, vegas xavc-i to ffmpeg, to dnxhr.
If you are in HD, vegas hdcam sr or sr-lite, ffmpeg, dnxhd.
