  • Problem maintaining video aspect ratio after render

Posted by Mike Figer on June 20, 2015 at 7:48 pm

Hello, I am trying to upload game-play captured via ShareFactory from my PS4 to YouTube. In order to get the file to my computer for editing, I had to transfer it via USB flash drive.

Originally, the video preview showed up small in my project preview window, so I thought adjusting it via Event Pan/Crop would do the trick. While it did not completely eliminate the black borders around the video, it made it so that the video was able to fill in the preview window with only a slim black bar on the top and bottom as opposed to huge black bars around the entire video itself.

I was willing to settle for it until after I had rendered. The render process reduced the video size to the exact size it was before my Event Pan/Crop edit.

Im not entirely sure as to what the problem is, so I figured i’d do my best to explain it with words and pictures with the hope of being able to upload without an aspect problem.

Here are my settings and some picture examples of what I am describing:

    Video Properties w/o Edits:
    -Length: 15 mins
    -Frame Width x Height: 1280×720
    -File Size: 758 MB
    -Total Bitrate: 7035kbps

What the preview window showed after I adjusted the Event Pan/Crop:

What it looked like BEFORE I adjusted Event Pan/Crop and what it looks like AFTER I rendered:

    Project Properties:

    Render Settings:

I apologize in advance for how confusing this must be to someone reading it, kinda hard to explain this. Any help is appreciated.

Im just curious, what is the purpose of recording games you play,
then uploading them to youtube, forgive me, but im just baffled as
to why this is being done so often and what is to be gained by it.
Because if you search thru this forum, there is a constant issue to
get good quality renders when using various devices or capturing software
to capture game play from these game consoles.
… Because content captured this way is not meant for editing, they are
not edit friendly for any NLE!

Anyway, in your Project Properties, try ticking
“Adjust source media to better match project or render settings”
And or in your render settings, try ticking
“Allow source to adjust frame size”

Toggle with these and see if you get better results!

I’m guessing you don’t have any kids. lol

Why do you watch sports on TV? What can possibly be gained by watching a bunch of guys in shorts and knee socks kicking a ball around a field of grass? (…or two guys hit a little white ball with a stick into a hole?) 😉

Recorded gameplay is recorded gameplay whether virtual or real. People like to watch it.

Everything looks perfect. This shouldn’t be happening.

Right-click on one of the events on the timeline and go to Properties and the Media tab and see what Vegas Pro thinks the resolution of the video is because this makes no sense at all unless Vegas is misinterpreting the dimensions of the original media.
