widescreen dv avi
so I have this raw footage that I wish to edit to master then encode to mp4 using vegas 12.0
If I open the footage in media player it shows as widescreen aspect ratio with horizontal black bars on top and bottom that make the viewing window 4:3
What project settings do I select in Sony Vegas to get a proper master file without any black bars. I have tried 720×480 NTSC DV WIDESCREEN but even that shows vertical black bars on the preview window and when I do a test encode to widescreen dv avi, I get those same black bars.
I play with the cropping a little with unlocking the aspect ratio but can’t get it to all fit in the window without either cropping actual footage or having the black bars.
Suggestions?

You should set your project to the properties that you plan to deliver. DV Widescreen and HD Widescreen are NOT the same aspect ratio (even though they are both referred to as 16:9 only HD is 16:9 and DV Widescreen is slightly wider) which is why you are having problems.
My advice is to set your project to the delivery aspect, then drop your media on the timeline, open Pan/Crop, right-click the Pan/Crop window and select Match Output Aspect. That will crop your media to the exact aspect of the project and delivery format. Then use Pan/Crop to zoom in a bit to remove any remaining black bars.

Ok nice, did that and manually cropped out so the black lines are barely visible.

I am thinking that I didn’t capture the dv footage properly. I am sure I captured it at the standard 4:3 setting and hence the horizontal black bars. There probably is a way to capture it as widescreen dv, right?

The correct way to capture DV is via firewire using Vegas VidCap. It’s not really a capture, it’s a digital data transfer. What was on the tape is exactly what is copied to the AVI file.
