Vista x64 Maximum RAM Limitations= 6.8GB?
This may seem slightly out-of-bounds for an AE thread, but I need to upgrade memory to accommodate my AE output/performance. And AE users can easily push the envelope for RAM use. So I try here.
Although Microsoft claims Vista x64 Home has a max memory limit of 16GB, credible sources inform me that in actuality only 6.8GB of RAM is recognized and useable/accessible – regardless of the physical amount of memory installed. Before spending $1K for a mem upgrade, I want to determine the practical reality.
Several Microsoft KBs have reported errors in Vista reporting true memory use/capacity, So the Task Mgr or Sys Info, etc, may not report the actual numbers accurately. And I know that the mem must be shared by kernel, resident processes, startup, applications, etc – so the number may be off slightly from what is reported. But 6.8GB vs 16GB is a bit of a difference.
Does anyone have a Vista64 system with 8-12GB of memory installed AND has observed that over 6.8GB of mem was actually being used when running numerous appls at full speed (rendering while encoding while writing DVD, etc) — in order to stress the RAM to full capacity?
Thanks for any feedback,
