Import exotic-encoded media (*.xesc)
In my quest for finding a screen capture tool that captures into a lossless file format that Vegas can import, I tried Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Capture.
It captures into the seemingly lossless xesc container format with a custom codec that is installed when installing the Expression Encoder.
That means that
– Windows Media Player can play those files,
– Windows Media Player can play wmv containing video encoded that way (repackaging possible with Expression Encoder), but:Sony Vegas can open neither.
I’m wondering: Since the codec is obviously installed somehow, can’t Sony Vegas make use of it?
Otherwise: Does someone have a better suggestion for lossless screen capturing? I also tried Camtasia Studio, but that seems even less promising.

I don’t know but it probably has something to do with the fact that Windows has several video subsystems, e.g., DirectX, Video for Windows, etc, and Vegas probably doesn’t look for that type of codec in that subsystem by default.

Camtasia is the industry standard. I make a living off of it so it absolutely works perfectly fine with Vegas Pro. I’ve had no problems editing with the TechSmith codec at all. The secret is to go into the record preferences and have it record an AVI file instead of a CAMREC file. That’s probably what didn’t work for you.

Many thanks for the Camtasia tip. You’re right, it works fine in the avi container.
Since you’re a Camtasia-pro: Do you happen to know if there’s a way to create the avi from a trec file in case you already happen to have recorded those?

Additional note:
When looking at a list of codecs installed on my windows system this way:
The Expression Encoder Screen Capture Codec is listed as a “DMO” (DirectX Media Object) and the (now) working Camtasia Codec is listed as “ICM”.
Maybe Sony Vegas doesn’t support DMOs?

Yea, drop the recording onto the timeline in Camtasia Studio and go to the Production option and tell it you want to produce an AVI file. Then select the Tech Smith codec and it will produce the same file as if you had recorded it as an AVI.
The advantage of the CAMREC file is that it also records mouse movements and then later in Camtasia Studio you can have it automatically zoom and scroll to where the mouse is. If you’re not editing with Camtasia Studio you don’t need this capability but a fair amount of the price of Camtasia is the editor which I use a lot because I have it on both my Mac and PC and it makes editing quick tutorials very easy.

Yea, that would be by guess as well. For the longest time Vegas only supported the old outdated Video for Windows. Then they added DirectX but I’m guessing that DMO’s are not supported.
