  Upgrading system

  Hello all,
  I have a late 2005 duel 2.3ghz G5. In the last few months I landed video/graphics gig that allowed me to purchase new Mac, memory, etc for work. I have my home computer that I feel is still very good (and I can’t upgrade yet.) I do alot of graphics work and art work independently but unfortunately can’t install CS4:( On my home system I currently have 6 gigs of RAM (not a lot I know, but it got me going.) But can anyone give me an idea of how my machine will run with 26 gigs of RAM? I can’t afford to upgrade my home system yet. It seems worth the $300 to max it out but I don’t have a concrete idea of how it will run afterwards. Will it be worth it?

  Different programs use differing amounts of RAM so the benefits will depend on the programs you are using. If you google about a bit there’s loads of mind numbing test comparison showing RAM use on Macs with various production software.

  Having said that, I reckon if you’re not in a position to upgrade the machine at the moment and won’t be for a year or so, $300.00 spent on Maxing out your ram is probably money well spent. Others may dispute the benefits but I’ve never been disappointed when I’ve bought more RAM for any machine I’ve had.

  Of course if it’s worth it or not depends on when you think you will be in a position to upgrade. Of course if you have a new grunty Mac Pro you are using at work, you may become increasingly frustrated with the older Mac at home – but that’s a different issue.
