    Free convertor…
There are more of these than you have fingers and toes. Handbrake is probably the most used.

If you have specific requirements, speak up.

    Free video editor…
A simple Google showed me this.

Windows movie maker is pretty decent.

For the Mac, I like ShedWorx SmartConverter and of course iMovie which is free with every new Mac. If you don’t have it, it’s only $14.99.

    Thanks everybody for answers.

Although Vegas is my pick personal usage, I intend to teach the basics of video editing for a teenager class.

About video editors I found useful the software Ezvid https://www.ezvid.com since it has all the basics as Movie Maker and in-buid screencast tools. The shortcoming is that it is available just for Windows. The only cross-platform software I found was Avidemux (https://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/), but I found it poor-featured. If you know better cross-platform video editor please let me know.

Regarding video/audio converter I found useful Freemake video & audio converter (https://www.freemake.com), Format Factory (https://www.pcfreetime.com) and HandBrake (https://handbrake.fr), being the later capable of handling only video. If you know better tool for video/audio converter, preferable cross-platform, please let me know.

    Best,
    Carlos

[Carlos Silva] “If you know better cross-platform video editor please let me know.”

Lightworks is cross-platforms and they do have a free version that you can download from here. The Mac version is still in beta.

While Lightworks is free, it might not be appropriate for beginning editors. It’s a professional tool that might get very deep very quickly. Something like iMovie or Windows Movie Maker may be more appropriate. There is very little software that is cross-platform so your budding editors should learn to pick a platform and stick with it. I would recommend the Mac. 😉

The one I suggested (SmartConverter) is cross platform. Here is a link to the Windows version. HandBrake is multi-platform too. That’s a good one to use as well.

MPEG Streamclip is my video file converter of choice, works on both Windows and OSX. It can be used as a basic video cropper also. Shame they don’t make Movie Edit Pro for OSX also, works great on Windows.
