    So I am making gameplay videos for YouTube and wondering if my current hardware and Vegas Pro settings fulfill my current rendering times.

    Source:
    1920×1080 @ 30fps
    20 minutes

    1 video track, 2 audio tracks, another 1 video track with only a picture at the end lasting for 20 seconds. No special effects.

    Render as:
    MP4 Mainconcept
    1920×1080
    30fps (same as source)
    VBR – Avg. 10,000,000 Max. 15,000,000
    Progressive download
    Number of Reference Frames – 2
    Field Order: None Progressive Scan
    High Profile
    1 Slice

    It takes about 40 minutes to render

    MY PC:
    i7 4770k no overclock – turbo to 4.1Ghz
    GTX 770
    8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
    Rendering to same Drive as source footage

    A 40 minute render for a 20 minute video is pretty good considering your GPU is not helping with the MainConcept AVC render. That’s only 2x realtime. Make sure the MainConcept AVC is using CPU only. That will give you the fastest render (it’s the default for Vegas Pro 12.0 & 13.0).

    Yep, CPU rendering only. I would also like to ask if using my 770 in Adobe Premiere be faster in rendering an identical project than CPU only in Vegas?

    *Update – It seems so much faster in Premiere Pro, maybe because they have better CUDA support? Either ways, I would like to know if GPU rendering would reduce overall quality of the video compared to CPU rendering. Take dark scenes, or fast motion scenes for example.

    And I know this may seem off topic, but does colour space matter when producing videos with a lot of darkness in them. So a lot of dark corners, black frames, or take a horror game for example. Would a colour space of 4:2:0 be enough or would RGB be better?

    I don’t use Premiere but Adobe prides themselves about their CUDA support so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was better than Vegas. Sony is primarily focused on OpenCL, not CUDA, which is why the ATI/AMD cards seem to perform better with Vegas than NVIDIA cards do.

    I would imagine that RGB would be better for video games than YUV because video games use the RGB color space. Also errors in color space conversion can cause color shifts in video.

    So if input/output uses different colour spaces could potentially lead to shifts/glitches in the video? Would GPU rendering be of the same quality as CPU? I’ve always thought CPU were meant to handle rendering processes much better.

    Yes, it potentially could lead to color shifts.

    Not necessarily. I’ve seen GPU renders that were worse quality than CPU renders. I consider that a bug because it shouldn’t be, but it does happen.

    Yes, this is why 3D applications like Maya, Cinema 4D, etc. will always use the CPU to render regardless of what GPU it uses to preview.

    I’ve seen Premiere pro rendering in real time or less, at the same project settings as I’ve used with Vegas. Both with CUDA and CPU only tested. Now this is rather strange, as I’ve heard Vegas to be the faster application to render with.

    Although I did have H.264 with Premiere and Mainconcept MP4 with Vegas – if this makes a difference.

    How much on a scale/how frequent does GPU rendering affect the quality of the end video compared to CCPU?
