I usually render to a avc MP4 format, the option for that has disappeared in the selectively pre-render box. Does it matter if I pre-render to a different format before finally rendering to avc mp4?

The selective pre-render is only used during playback. In a final render the original sources are used.

Thanks for that, I suspected and hoped that may be the case.

[Norman Black] “In a final render the original sources are used.”

Actually, that’s only true if the formats don’t match. If the final render format matches the pre-render format the pre-rendered files will be used. This is the one of the purposes of pre-rendering (i.e., to cut down on final render time). So, for example, if you pre-render to Sony MXF and your final render is Sony MXF using the same template, you will see the message “No Recompression Required” when it gets to the pre-rendered sections as it simply copies the pre-rendered files to the final output. Obviously if your final render format doesn’t match the pre-rendered format, the original source footage will be used.

Ahh, thanks for the information. Makes sense actually. Given this, then I wonder why Selective pre-render restricts most render as templates from being used. Sony and MC AVC are not there for example. Interestingly XAVC is.

I have always used XDCAM EX 35Mbps as a pre-render and my renders are always AVC, XAVC-S or DNxHD (for AVC via Handbrake).

I’m guessing that it is being restricted to only the formats that Vegas Pro can “smart render”. AVC isn’t supported for smart rendering but XAVC is because it’s all I-Frames. XAVC Intra Smart Render was a new feature of Vegas Pro 13.0.
