I often do transcoding/cutting jobs with vegas that consists only of a single media file – so I want the project settings to match the media settings.

I know of two places to do that with: the new project dialog and the project settings dialog. But in both cases, you have to select the media from the file system.

This is annoying, since I’ve already selected the media to be part of the project, usually with drag-and-drop. So I already selected the media file from where it lives and then I have to select it again to make the project settings match the media settings. Of course, the file dialog also usually doesn’t open where my media is. A nuisance.

Is there a shortcut? Ideally, I’d like a menu entry in the media context menu that says “use media settings for project settings” or some such.

    Does somebody have a tip?

I use Vegas 11 Home Studio.

If Home Studio works the same way as Vegas Pro does, you can save presets in the Project Properties window.
Load in a file like you usually do. Once you select it in the Properties window, save it as a preset (for example, My Camcorder).
When you start a new project, load your event, go to the Properties tab and select this preset.
In Vegas Pro, you also have the option (bottom of the Properties window) to Start all new projects with these settings if you want to.

You can easily do that in Vegas Pro as Mike pointed out,
but im not sure about Vegas Home Studio.

It is the same in Movie Studios. Incidentally, Movie Studio (Platinum) 13 now asks with first-added video, if “you want to set your project video settings to match this media.

All modern versions of Movie Studio and Vegas Pro will ask you when you drop your first piece of media on the timeline if you want to have the project match. No extra clicking about. You just may need to upgrade your software to get this new functionality.

Ok, thanks guys – seems I would need to upgrade.

If I did, I would take Home Studio 12, I don’t like what they did to 13’s UI.

Why not go with Vegas Pro 13 when it comes out this week?

Pro is overkill for what I need it for, and thus not a sensible investment for me at this point.

But I just checked that I would need pro: The only home studio version to show the dialog offering to take the media settings for the project is the one with the overhauled interface.
