Encoding question – Vegas 12
I have done some shooting with a Canon 5D2 and a 7D, and now I need to edit them with Vegas 12.
Would it be easier to edit and render if I converted them to an uncompressed format before editing with Vegas 12? Or should I not worry about that and simply put them straight on the timeline?
I have the Cinemartin Gold Gold encoder. Here are the options it presents:
You can also see an option to apply a “colormatirix conv.”; what is this and what does it do?
Worth noting, I have just upgraded to Vegas 12 from Vegas 10 and this will be my first time using the program.

I have another project which combines AVCHD clips with the Canon DSLR clips. I always figured because there are different file types I should make them all the same before I edit them?Or do I need to not bother at all with intermediate codecs?

Just for reference, you won’t be able to work with Uncompressed HD unless you have a RAID 0 with at least 5 disks to keep up with the I/O demand. You NEVER want to work with uncompressed HD video. This is why people use digital intermediaries.

As Steve pointed out, Vegas Pro 12.0 handles native DLSR video fine on the timeline. Earlier versions had trouble with this.

That’s really a personal choice. I mix HDV and AVCHD in a lot of my projects without any problems. Technically, it is always better to have everything in the same format, which is why most Mac editors convert everything to Apple ProRes before editing, but if your playback is smooth on your computer with mixed media, you should be alright.
