So I have been messing around with different bit rates when rendering a video and to be honest, I’m not really sure what it does. My setup: record games using Dxtory using the lagarith lossless codec YUY2 mode at 30fps. Now I have done tons of test clips in SVP12 with different bit rates and uploaded to youtube. Sometimes I can tell a difference but other times I cannot. My goal is to have the highest quality video to upload. When viewing videos in full screen on youtube I can see my videos are somewhat choppy but look great on the mid size player and this is with rendering at 1080p. Tried rendering in mainConcept and I’m not sure what to set the bit rate at. The larger I set it the larger the file is which is no big deal for me. Tried the 2 pass option and have seen slight improvement. Tried constant bit rate and again, not sure what to set it at. Also tried Sony AVC and the bit rate is maxed out at 25,999,360. And again not to sure what to set it at. I used to render in wmv until I found out that I can render faster and better using the above 2. So to make things short, looking for the best possible qaulity to upload to youtube and able to view in full screen 1080 and it to look just as good as the mid size player. I have seen it so i know it can be done but I just don’t know what setting to use or what bit rate to use. File size is no issue for me as I am used to 7+gb file sizes after rendering. Takes about 1.5 hours to upload.
    Thanks for the help.

Youtube re-encodes you uploaded videos to their own video settings. Their settings are pretty low bitrate.

With the online video services really all you want is to upload something that is better quality than their resulting re-encode.

Here is the Youtube upload support page.

One thing to complicate things is the quality of the encoder. Youtube and other online services typically use the x264 encoder which is the best out there in terms of low bitrate quality. Vegas has Sony AVC and Mainconcept AVC. Neither one is as good as x264 so you will likely want to pad the youtube reccomended upload bitrates a little to compensate for the lower quality encoder.
