Rendering Question for AVCHD to standard DVD
Just (finally) upgraded and will be recording several performances in 24Mbps AVCHD. In the past, I’ve recorded these in SD and rendered to Main Concept MPEG-2, DVD Architect NTSC Video stream. Everything worked fine that way. But now that I’m recording in AVCHD, how do I render this? Use the same Main Concept MPEG-2 DVD Architect but NTSC Wide Screen Video stream? I did a little test with a very short clip from a soccer game using that, and it looks a little washed out to me (when compared to the actual AVCHD clip). I will not be making any Blu Ray from this, just want the best quality standard DVD’s.

I also record in the AVCHD format, 24mb/s with my Sony NEX-VG10. I don’t create Blu Rays since I don’t have a Blu Ray recorder- I only make DVDs when needed. I output using the Main Concept MPEG-2 Widescreen as well, but I usually crank up the bit rates and also enable 2-pass since i’m never in a time crunch. My final DVDs have always looked great and haven’t really seen any differences between the final DVD output and my original clips, expect for fast-moving objects (ie- sports car racing).

As Dave pointed out, you want to use the DVD Architect NTSC DVD Widescreen template under MainConcept MPEG-2. Render your audio as Dolby Digital AC-3.

You have to understand that HD has 5 times the resolution of SD so you are never going to get the same quality. If you feel your video is a little washed out, have you viewed it on a TV? Don’t trust a computer monitor to show you what a TV will show you. They are two different technologies. Always test on a TV to determine quality.
If it’s washed out on your TV, you can add Color Curves to the Master Video Bus and create an “S” curve to increase contrast.

I will at times at a VERY SLIGHT sharpening (Sony FX) to the final master out on the video. This helps to keep some of the HD quality LOOK on SD DVD’s. It is not always needed but sometimes helps.
I also recommend 2 pass in MPEG 2, and as John states you are comparing apples and crab apples when going from AVCHD to SD (DVD).As always good lighting is ALWAYS important, but when going HD-SD I find it is even more important. Blacks are truer in HD and sometimes my OK lit HD doesn’t convert as well to SD and can appear a little too dark.
I have done a bazillion HD to DVD’s and this is at least my experience…
