    Hi All,

Using SVP12 and have started using my new Canon G30 that records an MP4, 1080p with 38mbps rate at 59.94. I noticed that Vegas does not have a preset for this for project presets. I built my own and then rendered out a short clip using Internet 1080p preset for Mainconcept AVC and the quality looks HORRIBLE compared to the original. I noticed that the bitrate isn’t that much lower, but expected better considering the original footage.

Any one have any thoughts on what type of project preset to build and/or what is the best way to get good 1080p footage for on the web from this type footage?

    Thanks for your help!

Main concept Internet HD 1080 has a much lower bitrate at 12Mbps average where you stated your camera was 38Mbps. If you want a bitrate similar to your camera, then you will have to edit and save a custom template.

Web 1080 from Youtube, Vimeo, Smugmug have bitrates around 7-8Mbps. Special accounts might be higher. Also, Internet is at most 30p from those services. They always re-encode stuff you upload.

You stated your video file info but what are your project settings and did you change the template any. MC AVC 1080 internet defaults to 29.97fps.

    Thanks Norman,

I am familiar with all of what you stated above. I do a TON of videos and such for online. My only difference is the 1080p vs 1080i and the 38mbps. But when I render out footage from a 1080i 24mbps clip from the same camera it looks better, so I am trying to find out what Vegas wants to do with a format it may not have a template for…make sense?

    Thanks for your input!

[Scott Francis] “so I am trying to find out what Vegas wants to do with a format it may not have a template for

Vegas converts your project video stream (project settings), whatever that is, to the format specified by the file encoding template (render as), whatever that is.

If Vegas does not have a template that gives the output parameters you want then simply create one that has the parameters that you want. Start with one that is close and go from there.

So the 59.94 you stated is interlaced? If yes, then that fits well enough to a 29.97 progressive output. Be sure to choose an appropriate deinterlace option in your project settings.

And btw, what are your project settings?

Perhaps I misspoke, it would seem odd that Vegas does not have a 1080p format with a built in preset, as that is a very common format. I set all the parameters in the project presets to match the original clip.
    1080
    Progressive
    59.94
    1.0 – Square
etc for a NON interlaced video stream

I just find it odd that the resulting video is SO diminished in quality vs the original.

    Thanks for your input!

If you used one of the “internet” templates unaltered, then your source needs to be resampled from 59.94 to 29.97. Vegas smart resample should be smart enough to just toss every other source frame in this circumstance. If it is not smart, then you can get ghosting when Vegas blends two frames into one in the resample. You can avoid this by turning resampling off.

By setting your project settings at 59.94 you are telling Vegas that is your probable output frame rate. In that case you should render as at 59.94.

As previously stated all the online video servers I am aware of will resample your upload down to 30p at most and who knows what algorithm they use.

IMO since internet bitrates are so low, you should abandon 59.94 for streaming internet delivery. Download delivery is another matter.

Ahhh, I get your point now….I will try that in the presets…

    Appreciate it!

1080p60 is a pretty recent option in camcorders, as a recording format. Your Canon VIXIA G30 supports the AVCHD 2.0 format and a camera-specific MPEG-4 AVC configuration for the 35Mb/s mode. The templates are primarily based on common output formats. There’s basically nothing out there that supports 1080p60 as a playback format. Blu-ray does 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080i50, and 1080i60, that’s it for the 1920×1080 formats (you can encode 1080p30 as 1080i60 and most modern televisions will deliver it as progressive… most modern TVs can’t actually display in interlaced mode).

Given that AVCHD 2.0 does include the 1080p60 format (my Panasonic TM700 was the second consumer/prosumer camcorder to offer a 1080p60 mode; the AVCHD 2.0 spec came later, but Panasonic and Sony control the AVCHD spec, so they could retroactively make this part of the spec), I’m surprised there’s no template for that, but it’s pretty trivial to make up a new template for anything you’re editing or rendering regularly.

So do I build a template (as I have) for 1080p 59.94 fps or for what I WANT to deliver to (1080p 29.97)?

If you want to deliver 29.97, then your project properties should probably be set to that. In this way any resampling, and its effects, of your 59.94 source will be visible in your preview window.

If you have a 59.94 source and your target is 29.97 I would disable resampling on the events. In this case Vegas will use every other frame from the source for the output. No ghosting.

As for output. If you are targeting the common internet video servers, then the Internet 1080p template, which is 29.97, is probably good enough. You might tweak it for one slice, high profile and two pass for a little better quality.

The AVC encoders in Vegas are not as good at low internet type bitrates as the x264 encoder which is commonly used by the online video servers. All this means is that the bitrate you upload to them should be a bit higher than what they re-encode to. You want what you give them to be higher quality than they deliver. In this way their re-encode will be as good as it can be.
