studdering and lagging in preview
just purchased a new computer with the following:
intel core i7 – 3770k Ivy Bridge 3.9 GHz Turbo Quad-Core
Samsung pro series 1T Solid State Drive … my C Drive
Samsung pro series 256 Solid State Drive… interior G Drive
Seagate Barracuda 1T 7200 E Drive
Asusgtx660 GD5 GeForce GTX …..yada yada … a fast video card!This computer has only 1 program installed sony vegas pro 12
the files are mp4
the project properties are set at 1080 – 60i (1920×1080)the files were acquired on a sony nex 7
what am I doing wrong… this machine should be powerful enough to prevent stuttering (especially at cuts and transitions). even at “preview auto” it still lags and stutters.
what am I missing?

btw, I just rendered a 3:30 minute film and it took only 5 minutes… so the problem is in the preview…
I also uninstalled and reinstalled the program… nothing changed.

then when I think about it…
the source files are large because they were taken with a GoPro set at the 2.5k resolution.
these files play smoothly when viewed in a media playback program such as vlc player or media player and I really thought my computer was powerful enough to replicate that within sony vegas pro… especially when I invested big bucks in a 1T solid state c drive.
was this just wishful thinking?

GoPro Black 2.5K files are using the AVC/H.264 codec at about 30Mbps or 45Mbps(protune) bitrate.
The AVC codec is very compute intensive. Small files, but hard/slow to decode.
The Vegas AVC decoder is not the quickest and/or Vegas has more overhead in its display subsystem. Either way Vegas apparently cannot keep up on your system with the 2.5K files. You may need to proxy for smooth editing.
As a reference on my system, 2.9Ghz core i7
Hero 3 Black 1080p30 20Mbps files can be edited
1080p60 30Mbps files must have proxies. -
it’s a bug in vegas 12… just reinstalled vegas 11 and it runs smooth… also runs smooth in vegas 12 platinum…
btw, I also have adobe cloud on another machine and downloaded adobe premiere pro… what a piece of #%#$%*%@!)… can it get any more loaded with code and bells and whistles… it would take me 10 minutes to do in premiere what it takes me 5 minutes to do in vegas.

I have seen this.
And I doubt it is a bug in 12.
When your project settings do not match your media settings preview can slow down a lot. In Vegas pro12 open your project settings.
Near the top, to the right of the template name, you will see a little film strip with arrow. Click that, it will match your project setting to a file you select. Select a file from your project. See if things get better. ( I also keep gpu off)
I think in 11 the project setting happened to match your media better.
Also was the go pro shooting 60 FPS? Are the files 1920i?
