I did a test with AE 7 and the render took 16min for a :30sec. HDV 1080 29.97 preset for time line and photo Jpeg for codec to render out to, without field render. I did this with the version of quicktime just before the new one I just installed QT 7.6.2. I opened the AE 7 project in CS3 and did the same setting for the render and it took about half hour. Would anyone know why this is happening? My computer is powermac G5 Quad 2.5 GHz. Please help and what is the best codec to use for rendering to Lacie drives 7200 RPM.? I heard that photo jpeg and apple pro res would be the best way to go. What would I set up my final cut project to? Just trying to figure this all out.

Dunno. But I’d never use HDV as a source, it’s not for editing.
Drive speed is not a factor as long as you are using separate drives for source and output and even then it’s not really critical, just safer and more convenient: your source footage is always on one drive, your rendered output is sent to another.
You don’t make codec decisions based on rendering time. You base your project settings on your target output and then work backwards. Most of your compositing in AE is likely to be done in the Animation codec. Whatever you’re doing in in FCP, you won’t be using the Animation codec as the timeline so all Animation files will require rendering.
These questions are quite broad. To understand the answers requires basic familiarity with the concepts in play, fundamentals for using video applications and creating media.
AE and FCP come with several thousand pages of manuals.

So I took it out of HDV and transfered the file to DVCPro HD with “Compressor” then brought it back to AE and rendered it in the same project the render took about 17 min for :10 as the HDV took longer. I was reading that if you are using HDV footage in AE therre are alot of problems and might slow down renders because of intera frames.Just wondering for broadcast and blue ray is DVCPro HD a good formate to work with? would I be able to deliver a 1280×1080, how would i deliver this to a broadcaster? what kind of tape. Please help me with different work flows. I am doing a test now changed the HDV footage to photo jpeg and doing a test in AE CS3. I will let you know. I will render using photo jpeg and bring into FCP. Would you have a pdf of different work flows for different deliverables, this would help me out greatly. Thanks for your help so far.

You can’t deliver HD on any tape format you probably have at your disposal and a broadcaster (which is very broad term) cannot likely play from Blu-ray. What you need to do is find out EXACTLY what they want you to deliver, codec, frame rate, frame size, audio sampling rate, and file format/container. Then you will try to figure out how to get it to them.
If they want tape, you will have to figure out what that means and then find a tape machine that will work. But outputting from FCP to HD tape is a BIG problem, start searching for helpful tutorials and discussions now. Could take you several days to figure it out and several more to obtain the gear and then run tests. Give yourself lots of time to make changes and corrections. You will not get it correct the first time.If they want files, you will hand them a DVD-ROM, not a DVD.

By Broadcasters I meant TV stations. Just wondeing how TV shows these days are being delivered. You mentioned that there is a problem with dvcpro hd for output? i have a kona lhe would this work and are there any issues? if dvcprohd is a problem what formate should i stick with?

what are deliverables usually for DVCpro HD, I guess I would have to bring to a hard drive to a dubbing house to transfer to ???what formate would dvcpro hd go to? sorry for all the questions and thanks for your help.
