I’m using a GoPro camera. I am having a hard time getting an output to match my HDTV screen. I’m using a flash drive through a Blueray player. If I save as .WMV, the aspect ratio looks right, but I get huge black edges – the image is much smaller than full-screen. So then I tried AVCHD at the suggestion of Sony Support. Now, the width goes to the edges, but there’s still a few inches of black at the top and bottom, and it’s distorted. Landscapes look OK, but people are stretched. If I could get it to stretch to the top and bottom of the screen, I think the people would become normal-looking. Any way to stretch the height?

GoPro suggested that the “fish eye” distortion of the camera was the problem, but it’s more than that. The rectangle shape of the output isn’t quite the same ratio as the TV.

    Thanks!!

The GoPro should be shooting 16:9 in either 1920×1080 or 1280×720 and your project should be set up to match. It sounds like something is different than those dimensions because you should not be experiencing any problems unless you changed these or use Pan/Crop to distort things.

Check that the footage, project, and render, are all using the same dimensions and aspect. You can make your project match your media with this button:

Which GoPro and what is the video mode you recorded your video in on the GoPro.

I have a GoPro 3 Black and have not had any problems. I have recorded 1920x1080p60, 1920x1080p30, 1280x720p60 and 1280x720p120. I have always rendered as AVC (Sony or Main concept). I watch my vids on my TV as output from a nettop PC via HDMI. I always let Vegas match project properties to the first video stream. I always changed the project back to 30p since the higher rates were recorded for a little better slo-mo when applicable.

The GoPro does have 4:3 aspect video modes, and my Black actually defaults to one of these modes.

    When I say 30p I technically mean 29.97. 60p is 59.94.

I think you may be on to something Norman. Let’s see Mike comes back with.

Mike, you can right-click on an event on the timeline and select Properties and then the Media tab and it will tell you what Vegas Pro thinks the footage is.
