Getting a 2.39 crop area on a t3i monitor
I’m experimenting with cropping 16×9 footage to 2.39, which in my brief editing and uploading to YouTube to test looks pretty good.
How can I get safe area markers on my t3i monitor? I read somewhere a while ago about how to print out some kind of transparency you make in Photoshop and put it on your monitor, but I can no longer find it. I know Black Magic offers a feature to show letterboxing in the monitor, but I don’t think I want BM on my camera because I read that you may sometimes need to leave the SD card in the camera for a few seconds after turning it off. I’m on shoots where I can’t delay switching cards a few seconds, plus, I know I’d forget to do it and potentially damage the card and footage.
I’m not a good mathematician, or I’d just measure the monitor and figure out the crop space based on that. Anyone know how to do this? I’d like to just be able to put a transparent piece of plastic that sticks to the monitor with crop/letterbox markers that I can peel off when I want to shoot in 16×9.

I still wonder how I can convert this into printing on something like lamination instead of having to load this on an SD card (I reformat them after shooting) each time.
I’ll also try out Magic Lantern and see how that works.

Just for everyone’s info, Black Magic does the job ably, and it doesn’t go on the video file itself. It’s just on the monitor. The footage comes out exactly as if you didn’t have crop marks.
And so far, Black Magic is working fine. I don’t know why the guide I read made it sound more tedious to deal with than it is. Several of the YouTube videos I found, as well as Black Magic’s own guide, have either needless steps for installation and use, or don’t talk about basic things you need to know when using it. Maybe I’ll make my own video guide to it. Black Magic even has helpful guides in camera when you press the t3i’s INFO button on any of the BM menus.
The only tedious part is that you have to install it on every SD card you use, but that only takes a minute or two, if that.
