  • Vegas Pro 12 – Slower Render With New GPU

Hi. I have recently bought a new graphics card, it’s just as a small upgrade to what I had before which was GT 610 2GB, I now have a GT 640 2GB.
With the old graphics card I was able to render a 3 min 720p video in around 20-25 minutes using CUDA which I was happy about but with this new graphics card I have tried to render some videos which are roughly the same length and quality but after 5 mins the progress is sitting at 0% with an estimation of over 2 hours to render and that is continuing to rise.
Is there something I am missing here? I would of thought that with the new graphics card I would atleast see similar render times but that is not the case.
Here are some of my other oc specs

    Windows 7 64 Bit
    Intel Core2Duo E6550 running at 2.8GHz
    8GB DDR2 Ram
    Asus P5K Motherboard

I know it’s far from a great computer but it’s been good enough for what I do on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Try reinstalling Vegas first!

I’ve just tried that and it has made no difference. When I start the render the preview starts as usual but after a few seconds it freezes and then goes black.

I’ve also just tried rendering the first 12 seconds of the videos. The render starts for a few seconds, get’s to 9% and then it goes no further

Given that it’s a new card, be sure you have the very latest drivers straight from either the card vendor or nVidia. The drivers on the disc that came with the card (assuming you installed those, rather than keeping the drivers for your GT610) are GUARANTEED to be too old to use. I don’t think nVidia does separate CUDA drives, but double-check — AMD did that for awhile, updating OpenCL indpendently of the video driver.

Updating the drivers was the first thing I did after installing the card. The card is a big improvement in terms of gaming, I can only assume that the problem is related to cuda.

I found a solution to the problem but still don’t know what caused it. For some reason I can no longer render with MainConcept and that includes with just the CPU but I can render using Sony AVC and with the new GPU I am seeing the times lower from 25 min to just 7 mins for a 3 min video. I don’t have a clue why I cannot use MainConcept now but I can only assume the GPU has something to do with it as that is the only thing that has changed.

I think there’s a few things you can still try. I don’t know if they’ll help you troubleshoot the problem, but try a RAM preview of your timeline before you do your render. Make sure your project properties match the properties of the clips in your timeline before you do so. Then when you pick the correct 720p template that you want, modify it and change to bit rate to something like 4Mb/sec for a constant bit rate. But if there’s a lot of detail and fast movement in your video, you can use variable bit rate with a high at 10Mb/sec and a low side of 4Mb/sec. Vimeo and Youtube love the AVC/AAC settings like this in an MP4 wrapper, and I find it’s pretty much all I need for 720p delivery. This may be a good compromise for you if you have a project that you need to finish quickly, and can’t wait till you get your problem completely solved.

GPU is such a touchy architecture Craig. Never a set solution.
