For a while now I have been unable to get into full screen preview mode. It seems like I’m stuck in “auto” mode. Usually, when in full screen mode I can only see a portion of the video depending on how big I stretch the preview window. Now, when I switch from auto to full I get no change except a slight difference in the quality of the image – but still the entire frame stays inside the preview window size.

Now occasionally, full screen preview will work but I don’t know what I might have changed to make that happen or make it go away again. Is there a setting I might have messed with?

It took me a while to figure out that you are talking about the Preview Quality drop-down because there is no full-screen option in the preview window.

“Full” in the Preview Quality drop-down only means that the preview resolution is the same as the project resolution. “Half” means just that – the preview resolution is half the project resolution. “Automatic” means that the preview resolution will automatically go down to allow full frame rate preview.

” Now, when I switch from auto to full I get no change except a slight difference in the quality of the image – but still the entire frame stays inside the preview window size.”

That’s the way it’s supposed to work. The preview display scaling is a Windows function – all that Vegas does is to send each frame to the window. Windows scales the data to fit.

Thanks for the reply Stephen. Yes I’m talking about the Preview Quality. For years and years the way this function worked for me was the Auto setting adjusted the video preview size to fit the window size you created for the preview (undocked preview window on second monitor). The Half option gave you exactly half sized preview regardless of the size of the window you’ve created for it. And Full gave you the actual size of the frame. So if I have a small preview window, I could not see the entire frame in either half or full – my preview window is usually sized to fit a quarter view. The way it used to work, even though I could not see the full frame, I COULD view the frame in actual size and the effects I’m working on can be viewed as they will look once rendered. In auto mode, and subsequently with the way things are working now, I can’t “zoom” in and see how things really look. Even this week for some odd reason when I started Vegas it was working the “old” way I was used to. But then it switched back.

There are some settings under Preferences that I thought might affect this situation:
    1. Preview Device tab – “Scale output to fit display” has no noticeable affect on my preview.
    2. Video tab – “Display at project size” has no noticeable affect on my preview either.
So I’m not sure what either of these functions is doing if indeed they are working at all.

I’ve been using Vegas since Version 3 and the preview window always showed full-frame. The Preview Resolution drop-downs “Full”, “Half” and “Quarter” select the displayed resolution compared to the project settings – not the size. A 1920×1080 PROJECT will preview at 920×540 when “Half” is selected, but it is still the full-frame.

    “Scale output to fit display”
This only applies to external (mostly Firewire based) monitors.

    “Display at project size”
This overrides your selection in the Preview Resolution drop-down list. But only until your change it in the Preview Window drop-down. Again, I suspect it is a leftover from external monitors where Windows didn’t control the display and couldn’t scale the preview image. In fact on an external Firewire monitor, all you see is the image. The menu items at the top are Windows features.

“So I’m not sure what either of these functions is doing if indeed they are working at all.”
There could very well be some users still using external Firewire displays. I would if I could afford one. They have the advantage of being more correct (properly calibrated) than almost any of the LCD displays we use today.
