DVD video size for projection
I’m playing a DVD on a projector for an event and ran it today, but the aspect ratio was a little off so that the video was vertically squeezed a little, but the main problem is that that there’s black space all around the picture, as if I’m looking at the video in the preview monitor in Vegas when I’ve brought the video into the safe area. That’s on top of the letterboxing, and it looks like the DVD player or projector is adding additional letterboxing, which may be making for the small vertical squeeze/stretching the image out.
I don’t have much access to the projector and have to run the video again tomorrow. I guess there’s nothing to lose by rendering it again and seeing how it runs tomorrow, but should I increase the image size so that it’s not in the safe area? And should I not render in widescreen video stream (which adds letterboxing)? I’m burning the DVD with DVD Architect.

There should be a menu on the projector to adjust aspect ratio and/or resolution. Is the DVD fed from a DVD player or computer? I assume you rendered to standard DVD specs.

I have no idea. It’s for an event and someone is running a live broadcast backstage as well as occasionally playing my DVD, but I really don’t know. He plays the live footage from the other camera operators, which looks fine during the show. I don’t know if I’ll have much of a chance to talk to the guy running the video to get it working/time to test it out.
I rendered to standard DVD specs and have been doing so for years. Widescreen videostream, 16×9, track motion used to bring the video into the safe area.
Maybe I should just render one that’s not letterboxed or int he safe area, because both seem to be showing up in the projection, though unintentionally badly.

How? I suspect that this is your problem. The safe area is only a recommendation. It means everything inside the safe area will be visible on practically all viewing devices. This goes back to the days of CRT televisions where the edges of the TV were usually covered with a bezel because the edges of the image were distorted. Especially early color-TV’s which had round picture tubes. But most digital displays will show the full frame or within a few pixels. If you used track motion or pan/crop to “shrink” your video into the safe area, then you created the black box around the video.

With track motion, but it hasn’t been an issue when I’ve rendered DVDs and played them on tv. I’ll try it out without it and see what happens.
