I have an external monitor in Vegas 12. I have a very import client that complains that the audio is out of sync when playing back to the monitor without using the audio going into the monitor. There is a little latency not on the Vegas screen video monitor but only the external monitor. I reassure him that the a-v is in sync but he is not happy. I know that I can run audio to that monitor to get rid of the problem but I like the sound coming from my audio system. Is there a way to compensate for the delay?

Flat panel monitors ( especially LCD ) can have considerable delay.
When using the audio and video inputs to the monitor, the monitor can compensate by delaying the audio to match the video delay.
You best bet is to see if there is an audio OUTPUT on your monitor, feed that into you audio system. This isn’t a vegas issue, I can’t use the analog audio outs on my DVD player while watching a blue ray on my Plasma, even then I need to listen to my TV output.

Yes it does, in the Preview Device options in Preferences, when IEEE external preview is selected.
