Render for Youtube looks really bad at 360p

Hi all!

I’m new to this forum, please help.

I’ve been trying to render videos from Sony Vegas to upload to Youtube but the quality when viewed at 360p (most people watch at this quality) is really bad. However, everything’s fine at 720p. I have search and try out many solutions from creativecow and Youtube but none of them seems to work. Even with different bitrates, H264 plugins, Sony AVC, Mainconcepts,… This problem seems to come up on every video I made using sony vegas.

Did you watch that last clip at the 360 setting? Do have a look.

Also it would appear that last clip – not yours – has an Upper option of full HD. Yours tops-out at 720.

I think we need to compare like for like.

I tried to upload it again at 1080p but the same quality still occurs.

Many popular Youtube channels provide great quality at 360p (with 720p max). I’ve been readings some forums and they say bitrate is the problem, I’m not sure. Another thing is my video looks much better in Sony Vegas preview than when rendered out.

You are seeing all that is wrong with CMOS cameras and video compression. The GoPro video look great because the shots are planned and probably selected from hundreds of clips. Notice that everything in the GoPro video is shot at 60p. Also, the backgrounds of the GoPro videos tend to be quite monochromatic – blue sky, white snow or ocean waves. Very easy on the compressor. Your backgrounds are very complex, so the compressor spends a lot of it’s budget trying to encode the background and the whole image suffers. Also in the GoPro videos, close ups really dominate the framing. The compressor doesn’t know the background from the foreground so it treats every change from one frame to the next equally. More compression results in less quality. The ground under the bicycle get the same amount of compression as everything else – meaning, a lot, and the quality suffers. I’ve seen outdoor wedding videos ruined for compression because the trees in the background were blowing gently in the breeze. And forget about getting decent compression for hand-held shots.
