    Hi all,
I usually work with FCP and sometimes Premier, but I have been asked to cut something on someone else’s computer using Vegas Pro 11. My video was shot on a Canon 60D at 1080 30i. They have asked for the final product to be a DVD. When I have tried playing the original footage in Vegas, it stutters… or choppy. Do I set the video prefs to 1080… or do I need to convert the footage first, as I do with FCP? I have Magic Bullet Grinder in case it needs to be converted.

    Thank you in advance.

You need to tell us more about the computer. Stuttering usually indicates that the computer is a bit underpowered. It should help if you reduce the quality of the preview window.

Thanks Bob. Yes, it is underpowered… duo core 1.6. I usually use Macs… so this is all a new ballgame for me… but don’t have a choice in this moment. I figured the hd ftg was probably way more than the computer could handle, but was hoping it was more of a codec thing.

I will look at the preview window.

So.. what about the video prefs… 1080?

Your project settings should match your video. If the video was recorded at 1080i-30fps, then your project settings should be the same.

    Thanks Dave and Bob…
I had everything set right… but still had the problems, therefore I think it’s just too slow of a computer to handle the footage. So I’ll just have to talk them into doing it on my Mac in FCP.
    Thanks again.

The high bitrate compressed H.264 is too much for the CPU. You need a proxy in something like MPEG-2. You have Vegas 11 so you don’t have the VP12 Smart proxy feature so unfortunately you would have to do this manually.

As a point of reference, my core i7 860 2.9Ghz, can edit GoPro 1080p30 20Mbps files okay, but has issue with 1080p60 30Mbps files. The DSLRs put out more like 40Mbps.
