  colors go through color phases in video

  I’ve capture video off of old vhs tapes. I have a recurring problems with the colors changing in phases. It’s most notable on faces, but it occurs all over the video. So, a face might have proper flesh tones, but then get a bit too red, then fade to where the face is way too pale and then go back to it’s proper flesh tone. I believe this is a common problem problem but I don’t know it’s proper term.

  Anyway, is there a way to fix this after it has been captured? For instance can I build a preset for one frame that has the correct colors and just apply it to the entire clip?

  First off, ensure the integrity of the VHS source. If the source is similar to what you’ve already captured then I don’t see much you can do unless you’ve got lots of time to correct the footage on a shot-by-shot basis.

  If the tape is fine, then ensure that you are capturing using the highest possible I/O available. If your VHS player has component or S-Video then they will be better than composite. YOu may also send the VHS signal into a digital deck/camera and then capture via a digital connection (including firewire).
