Rendering issues?
It has been awhile since I used this forum, so I apologize if I am posting this in the wrong place.
I am having a rendering issue with Sony Vegas 11. I just reinstalled it on a new computer and my first video is taking 18 hours (and counting) to render a less than 5 minute video.
I have previously used versions 7, 8, and 9 and it would take, at maximum (with many effects), an hour to render something this size, but usually 20-30 minutes. I am working with wmv, rendering to wmv, same as I always have and there are very few effects in this video… only a black and white effect through about half.
Can someone help me figure out why it is taking so long? I have tried changing formats, I have tried shutting down and rebooting, along with a few other things (I started trying to render this on Wednesday, its now Friday). Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

Do you have the GPU enabled?…If you do, turn it off.
And also, If you are not using the newest version of Vegas 11,
download and install the newest version from the Sony website.Steve Rhoden

I don’t mean to sound stupid, or incompetent, but what is GPU? and is it enabled by default? if so how do I disable it. I do not believe this has been an option on previous versions I have used. I am pretty sure I have the most recent version, as it did a whole bunch of updates when I installed it. Thanks so much for your help it is so greatly appreciated!

GPU is Graphics Processing Unit, it is a special chip that is designed to perform graphics operations more rapidly than the jack-of-all-trades CPU you normally use.If you have one, it is important to get the latest version of the driver for it and the latest patches from Microsoft for your OS. If you have configured windows update you will have these anyway. You may need to go to the vendor web site to get the latest GPU driver.
So how do you know what you have? the quickest way is on Vegas. Go to the Options Menu and select ‘Preferences’ from the menu item.
On Preferences select the Video tab. Look for ‘GPU acceleration of video processing’. It will either say ‘Off’ (which is Steve’s advice) or list the GPU version you have. If it is NVIDIA go to their website and go to driver downloads, they have a little app that determines what Driver you need and allows you to enrol in a service keeps it updated. If a vendor is in your dropdown you can try switching to ‘Off’ and try again.It is counter-intuitive to turn it off but it sometimes works better without it.

Thanks for the awesome information. I know I have GPU on my laptop, as I have the GPU: AMD APP enabled on my Xili for conversions. It does not however show it in my Vegas drop down, which is OK, and just showed as off. I finally gave up, after trying the trial version of 12, having the same problem… and then just uninstalled 11 altogether and went back to Vegas pro 9, where, instead of 20 hours (which was the final render time on my 4.5 minute clip) it took 3.5 minutes to render. Despite all the new bells and whistles Vegas has brought out, I will just stick with good old 9.Thanks to everyone for their awesome help and support!
