Vegas thumbnail creation
Posted by Larry Brewer on February 23, 2013 at 5:07 amMy Vegas 12 setup has three 1080×1920 monitors I use for timeline, pgm monitor, and project media window. The project media window displays 13 thumbnails horizontally by 10 thumbnails vertically. That would be 130 thumbs if they were actually all visible at the same time. Only 100 thumbs can be displayed the rest remail grayed out. when I scroll new thumbnails appear at the top of the window as previous thumbnails dissappear at the bottom of the window. The whole process is very time consumming. Also I can never see the top 30 thumbnails. Why is this happening? What can be done about it? I hope this video is helpful.

February 23, 2013 at 8:50 amNo, everything works normally in the windows explorer within Sony Vegas, and on my PC in general. And once the thumbnails are created, they stay created.
This has been my experience with Project media window with each and every Vegas version I have ever operated. Can someone at least tell me if this is normal?

February 23, 2013 at 9:14 amVegas uses the Windows Explorer for Thumbs. If you were also having the same issue in W.E. then that could have pointed to that being the issue. But it’s not, so having asked the question and you replying, then it would appear this is solely with Vegas.
What happens if you could “view” the Thumbs in Vegas Explorer? Do you have a Single Folder with masses of Thumbs in it?
The other option I use is Media Manager. I’ve not yet come across a limit there?
I can’t answer what is a great question.

February 23, 2013 at 2:23 pmThe project window in vegas has always had this problem. Thumbnails dont work the same in explorer, you can see every thumbnail. If you really want a bigger problem, load your bin with 200 avchd 60p clips and watch vegas explode.
Why sony cant fix this or the time it takes to “build Peaks” is beyond me.

February 23, 2013 at 6:56 pmLarry, I recommend you to show this video to Sony Vegas support team.
I agree, this is annoying! -

February 26, 2013 at 5:57 amThis came up a few years ago, but a forum search comes up empty. Basically I recall that it’s a limit of the size of the thumbnail buffer, but I am not aware of any preferences changes you can make to get more thumbnail buffer memory. You should ask Sony Tech Support.
I suspect that the thumbnail buffer size is hard-coded and was set when a 1K wide display was the top of the line. (Just like Bill Gates once saying that 64K should be enough RAM for PC’s.)

[Larry Brewer] ” And once the thumbnails are created, they stay created.”
Vegas Explorer gets me all my Thumbnails, including MXFs. However, Project Media > Import Media will NOT show me MXF thumbnails. So another divergence.

February 26, 2013 at 5:28 pmI mean hard coded into Vegas. Vegas makes and manages its own thumbnails in the Project Media window., and there is a 100 thumbnail limit.
I installed the Microsoft Raw codec pack (recommended by Sony) and it gave me thumbnails for a lot of filetypes: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829
