Edit in Vegas Pro with Nvidia 3D Vision
What I am trying to do:
I use two camcorders to shoot HD video (1080i). I want to use Vegas Pro 12 to edit and burn 3D movies to Blu-ray disc using the material I have shot. I note that many people claim they have done this and I have studied all the manuals, help files, videos, and webinars I can find and have followed the instructions given. I have corresponded with Sony technical support. I have installed the latest update. All without success.
My camcorders produce MTS (AVCHD) files. I have converted these to AVI, as well as Cineform MTS and Cineform 3D (multiplexed) AVI files and imported each of these file types into Vegas Pro following the instructions found in the videos, tutorials, manuals, etc.
My system uses an Nvidia Quadro 4000 card with an Alienware AW310 monitor to display 3D material using Nvidia 3D Vision (emitter plus glasses). I have no problem viewing BD 3D (commercial) discs and viewing and editing with Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 in 3D. The machine is Win 7, 64-bit, Intel i7 processor with 24GB of memory.
I have set up Vegas Pro as instructed (Options/Preferences/Preview Device/Windows Graphics Card/Left and Right). Yet, Vegas Pro does not display the imported files (MTS, AVI, Cineform AVI, Cineform 3D AVI) material in 3D with Nvidia 3D Vision.
According to the information I have found, selecting left and right tracks (left eye on top) and right-clicking one of the tracks brings up a requester containing a selection “Pair as Stereoscopic 3D Subclips.” Selecting that is supposed to display the material in the Preview Window and External Monitor in 3D. However, the “pair as stereoscopic 3D subclips” item is always GHOSTED, regardless of what file types I am using.
Attached are two screen shots. One shows the ghosted requester with left and right MTS files on the timeline and one shows the ghosted requester with a Cineform AVI 3D file on the timeline. As you can see, the option to “pair as stereoscopic 3D subclips” is unavailable in both cases.
If you can explain what I am doing wrong, not doing, or should be doing, I will be forever in your debt!

Go into your Project Properties and set your Stereoscopic 3D Mode to something other than Off. This will turn on 3D mode.

Unfortunately, there is no “left and right” setting there. The “Left and right setting” appears to be necessary to set up the project for 3D Vision. “Left and right” only appears under Options/Preferences/Preview Device/Windows Graphics Card.
From page 201 in the User Manual: “If you’re using an NVIDIA graphics card that supports 3D Vision technology and a 3D Vision monitor, choose the Windows Graphics Card setting from the Device drop-down list in the Preview Device tab and choose Left and Right from the Stereoscopic 3D mode drop-down list.”
However, the only settings available in the File/Properties dialog besides “Off” are Side by side, Top/bottom, Anaglyphic, Line alternate, Checkerboard, Left only, Right only, Blend, and Differenc.
No “Left and Right.”

Aah, I get it! The “project” settings are the settings that will be used to output the project to disc for distribution. The “preferences” are the settings used for the display. They do not need to be the same.
