Rendering Sony AVC MP4 from a MOV source file
My friend captured an event with his Canon GL2 into an Apple computer with Adobe Premiere… he sent me the 20 GByte MOV file. I added it to my timeline in Vegas 11 and added the slides, etc. and rendered the results with the Sony AVC MP4 standard thing 640×480, 2 mbps. But my client says it looks blurry !!! I’m in a panic.
If I buy Apple Quicktime, will it provide a codec that can render this project without uncompressing-recompressing, causing blurry output??

2Mbps is rather low even for 640×480. Try bumping the bit rate up to 6Mbps and see if it gets better (I bet it will). BTW, you are also making it soft by changing the aspect ratio. The Canon GL2 is shooting 655×480 PAR 1.0 so resizing will make it blurry too.
Also try the MainConcept AVC encoder. Sometimes it does better with low bit rate output.

Nope. Vegas Pro doesn’t use QuickTime Pro at all so the additional codecs will do you no good in Vegas.

Thanks John!! How can I make the Sony avc render in 655×480 to avoid the softness? I will do that, and increase the bit rate. ALSO, this project is setup as a Standard def. DV AVI project to begin with.. is that okay?

You can’t for Sony AVC. You would have to use the Memory Stick SD NTSC – 6256 Kbps template but that uses a Pixel Aspect Ratio of 0.9091 which is bad for Internet video because some media players will assume that the PAR is 1.0 and not display it correctly. You need to use the MainConcept AVC encoder and set the frame size to Custom. That will let you type in 655×480.

Yes, that’s what I assumed it was. That’s correct. The problem is that DV doesn’t use square pixels and TV sets compensate for this but Computer Monitors don’t so you need to convert 720 x 0.9091 to 655 to get square pixels again (654.552 rounded up to 655).
