I edited a short film (30 min) into seven individual files. What is the best format to render those files individually to then build a master file which I will rerender into Blu-Ray? Or should I render each chunk as a Blu-Ray render and build on timeline of DVD Architect?

[Tony Feijoo] “What is the best format to render those files individually to then build a master file which I will rerender into Blu-Ray?”

The best format is not to render at all. You can just drop all of your project .veg files into a single master project and Vegas Pro will treat them as any piece of media. Then when you render it will be the first time and you won’t have any quality loss. (this is referred to in the help file as “nested projects”)

To answer your question directly, the Sony MXF format would be a good format to render to that holds up well when rendering a second time.

DVD Architect doesn’t have a timeline that allows you to place multiple files on, and chaining them together with end-actions has it’s drawbacks. You want to feed DVD Architect one large file from Vegas Pro.

John, could you tell me how to open several .veg files into a single master .veg file?
    Thanks.

[Paul Whitlock] “could you tell me how to open several .veg files into a single master .veg file”

Create a new file and then simply drag and drop your veg files on the timeline using Vegas’ explorer. Save your new file and call it something like master1.

Note: Whenever you update the nested subfiles and reopen the master file, Vegas will regenerate new proxy files for the nested files that have changed. It just means your master project may open up a bit more slowly.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 11 (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

Thanks, Nigel. I tried this nestling process, but without total success. When I drag the second Vegas file into the already-open timeline of the new master project, the several video tracks in the second file seem to get rendered into a single video track in the new master, which is fine; but the same thing doesn’t happen with the audio tracks – only one of the several audio tracks opens in the master timeline. How can I get the audio tracks to render to one, also?

This is how it is supposed to work. The entire project becomes one video and one audio track. Note that Nested Projects do not support 5.1 Surround so all of the audio will be mixed down to two track stereo. Perhaps this is why you feel that audio tracks are missing?

The single audio track I get after nesting is not a render of the two original tracks. I have two audio tracks in the original project – the sound recorded by the camera is on one and some music on the second – only the audio track of the sound recorded by the camera is present after nesting. The music is not there at all, either as a separate track or rendered into the single post-nesting track. (Hope this is not the second time I posted this; I tried once before, but cannot see the posting).

What format is the music? I though I’ve read of some problems with nesting certain MP3 files. Try rendering the music track to WAV and see if that helps. Could be a bug in Vegas Pro so maybe you should report it to Sony.

The music file is a a wma file, ripped from a commercial CD. I’ve tried the nesting process with two different .veg files and this issue happened with both. I guess I could use Render As for the audio, using .wav or .wma, and drop it onto the timeline in the master project. I did report to Sony, as you suggested. Thanks again for all your help.
