Why does Vegas pro 11 crash when trying to render with GPU CUDA?
Posted by Jason Yip on January 17, 2013 at 6:21 pmI am running Vegas Pro 11 64-Bit and a GeForce GTX670 Card. Vegas shows that GPU is available. When I try to render using “Automatic” Vegas crashes and I can only render when using “Render using CPU only”. Any ideas?

January 17, 2013 at 7:34 pmIt could be because the 600 series cards were not officially supported. The 500 series works, I have the GTX570. In theory the API should abstract the architecture changes NVidia made, but the primary focus for the GTX cards are gaming rather than CUDA and OpenCL parallel computing. Try the latest beta or certified drivers as NVidia eventually addresses some issues. If you read the NVidia release notes, they are all about increasing performance in games and rarely mention CUDA updates.
In version 12 of Sony Vegas you now have the option to choose OpenCL or CUDA, indicating that there are varying issues with these two libraries as supported by the different video card manufactures. I would recommend using CUDA with NVidia as that has been their native interface for years. OpenCL was to allow support for NVidia and ATI, but seems like the implementation is not quite mature across all video drivers yet.

January 19, 2013 at 12:19 pmMark explained it very well. Something changed with thew Kepler architecture that is causing problems. This speaks volumes about how poor the NVIDIA CUDA API must be because it should be transparent if they did their job correctly but obviously it’s not. The bottom line is that it’s time to upgrade your Vegas Pro software to match your Kepler hardware.

January 19, 2013 at 11:50 pmI would recommend the 500 series, because with my GTX570 the GPU utilization rarely goes above 30% with Sony Vegas. With the money you save you could get something that would make your editing more productive (maybe some FASST apps or some plug-ins)

I would agree that the GTX570 seems to be the one giving people the least amount of trouble. Some of the new 600 series cards don’t even work with Vegas Pro yet so it’s hard to say how good they will be.

I’m not sure that it matters much. All of the cards are just variations on the NVIDIA reference design. I’ve used PNY, MSI, & Zotac over the years and they were all fine. I’m sure ASUS and Gigabyte are fine too.
