  • Sony Vegas Export and DVD Burning Issues

I just recently completed a 90 minute feature film shot in HDV which I edited on Sony Vegas Pro and I’m having issues with my export. My video and audio look great coming out of Vegas but as soon as I try to burn a regular DVD, the video ends up looking darker than what I see on my computer and the audio sounds too compressed. I’m not sure if I have my export settings correct in Vegas. So here’s my 3 questions that I hope someone here can answer:

    1) What should my proper export settings coming out of Vegas be to maintain hi-res footage and audio?

    2) What’s the best DVD making software where I can burn a 90 min movie at high res settings and without audio compression?

    3) What are the proper audio settings for the final sound mix in the DVD export in order to maintain our dynamic range?

[Andre Joseph] “1) What should my proper export settings coming out of Vegas be to maintain hi-res footage and audio?”

First you need to understand that there is nothing “hi-res” about DVD’s. They are extremely low-res with 5x less resolution than your HD footage. You should render using MainConcept MPEG-2 with the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream template for 16:9 widescreen (or the PAL template if you are in a PAL country). Then render your audio as Dolby Digital AC-3 Pro using the Stereo DVD template. If you give both files the same name just with different extensions, then DVD Architect will know that the files go together. Finally just author your DVD in DVD Architect.

[Andre Joseph] “2) What’s the best DVD making software where I can burn a 90 min movie at high res settings and without audio compression?”

You can render your audio to Wave (Microsoft) using the 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, PCM template and get uncompressed audio. The problem is, it may not fit on a single-layer DVD with 90 minutes of video. You may have to move to a double-layer DVD. DVD Architect can handle this.

[Andre Joseph] “3) What are the proper audio settings for the final sound mix in the DVD export in order to maintain our dynamic range?”

You can modify the Dolby Digital AC-3 template to not use as much compression. Just edit the Stereo DVD template and on the Audio Service tab change the Dialog normalization to -31db. Then on the Preprocessing tab change the Line mode profile and RF mode profile to None and save that with a new template name.

The new settings you suggested worked beautifully. Thank you so much John. You’re a lifesaver.
