GPU assisted preview playback?
Posted by Myron Hobizal on December 19, 2012 at 12:06 amVegas Pro 12 website states it has smooth preview playback with OpenCL cards. I have an AMD 69xx series with 2GB, and my previews stutter. Is there an option to turn GPU assistance for previews?

It should be on by default. Check Options | Preferences | Video for GPU acceleration of video processing and make sure it’s not off.

December 19, 2012 at 5:40 amYes that option is on. Frame rate in the preview window just is not consistently 24p, unless I use Preview(Auto) mode. For my hardware, quad-core Q6600, AMD 6900 series, I would expect smooth playback, at least in Preview(Best).
Some clips will play at 24p(Best Full), then other clips on the same timeline will drop way down to 7fps(Preview Auto). All I have is a simple fade between these clips. Maybe it’s just time I upgrade to dual Xeon chips and dual GPU cards?

December 19, 2012 at 1:40 pmPlayback frame rate depends on a number of things. Is the frame rate of your project and the frame rate of the media the same? Likewise for resolution. The codec used by the media will also affect the playback rate.
Also, is your GPU being limited by your CPU? A Q6600 QuadCore is 5 year old technology and the AMD 69XX Series is brand new technology. When I purchased my NVIDIA Quadro 4000, it said that it required a Core iSeries CPU. This wasn’t advertised anywhere but it said it on the box has plain as day. I had an old QX6700 QuadCore at the time and I wasn’t impressed with my GPU performance. Then I upgraded to a Core i7-3930K HexCore and now my Quadro 4000 is screaming with Vegas Pro. So it could be a matter of using better matched components.

December 26, 2012 at 7:26 pmHi,
And to check if your GPU is actually used during preview, you may use a tool like EVGA Precision: it will show you the percentage of load. If it does not raise during preview and stays at 0 or so, then your card is most likely not recognized by Vegas.
Hope this helps,
