How to properly remove VHS overscan lines
I’m trying to remove the VHS overscan lines from my videos, which amounts to roughly 10-14 pixels at the bottom. I know that you won’t see it on a TV but you will on a computer. My thought is that you can limit the amount of resolution loss by cropping out the bottom (or masking it) and then centering the remaining video so that you’ve got equal amounts of black space on the top and bottom of the video. This is probably the best way to handle it I can see – but I can’t find a way to center the video vertically. I also heard that masking produces less rendering time than cropping so it won’t resize. Can someone lend a hand getting to this final part or suggesting a better way?
If I want to create another version without the black lines, I’d like to be able to do that too without having to stretch the video (it will just be an odd size to view on a PC.)

I am about to do the same thing… capture VHS to DVD, and in the past the only way to remove the lines at the bottom has been to open pan/crop and zoom in a touch. I really didn’t lose much in resolution, at least no-one noticed it 🙂

Thanks Phil. When you’re dealing with 720×480 video, which is quite small to begin with, I didn’t think you would want to lose any more resolution than is necessary. Hence preserving the sides and not blowing up the image might make for a better viewing experience… but I guess it could be negligible.
I have heard masking out the bottom is much faster for rendering times, which is key when you’re doing as many videos as I am. I can’t find a way to mask out the bottom and then center what I have. If it renders more quickly, this will save a ton of time.
I looked at what I did and it seems I maintained the aspect ratio and simply cropped out the bottom half way and then moved the selection area up to the top. Right now it fits perfectly in the screen and I guess it will do for now. Thanks for your response and good luck with your VHS editing!

I probably should have said I have done this a few times before for archiving VHS tapes, and in the PAL world there really isn’t much difference to be seen given the original resolution. Technically yes, there is a slight loss, but in reality… have a look, is all I can say.
