Contour shuttle: pro v2 vs express
I’m just an amateur, not a pro and I don’t do video editing every day.
I usually do multicam editing on a sub par PC with not much fluidity in playback and I often have to manually search for the actual frame where to place a cam marker. Now I would like to get a shuttle to make the jogging/scrubbing easier (so I hope).
As I read here around, being a righty I will probably place the shuttle on the left of my kb. I had a look at Contour products and I’m wondering if for me it will be enough the Express or if would be better to get the Pro v2. It’s not a problem of money but of functionality and of usability. Unfortunately, here in Italy I can’t find a shop where to try them so, let me ask a couple of questions here:1 – Do you really use all of those buttons on the Pro? With your “spare” hand? Isn’t it awkward?
2 – Does the two devices have the same stability or one is far better than the other?
3 – How big (small) the two things are? I couldn’t find the size specifications.
4 – Is the quality of the build the same for the two?
Hope someone did put his hands on both and will be able to answer.

I just got the pro v2 and have been really happy with it. It is bigger than I thought (7.5″ x 4″), but it is a nice size and does not move around on my desk. The software is pretty easy to configure the buttons. I bought it for Sony Vegas Pro, but I have started assigning buttons to Firefox, and Audacity. The software allow you to print out a sheet that displays what buttons are configure and I set the pro v2 on top of that sheet to help me remember the button assignment. I find that in Firefox it is a nice break from the mouse occasionally. I have the shuttle dial scroll the page, the jog dial change the tab I am viewing and the two buttons I use for zoom in and out for Sony Vegas timeline are used to zoom in and out of the Firefox page.
The Pro v2 has a nice palm rest for my left hand that the express does not have. I never used the express though, so I cannot give you the comparison you were looking for.

Just go with the Shuttle Pro V2, i use express and can tell

I would advise you to go with the Shuttle Pro. The Express only has five buttons, compared to 15 on the Pro. You might not need to use all the buttons at first, but at least you will be able to add functions as you need them without running out of buttons.

Of course, in this case it should be true that “more is better” but looking at the pictures I was just wondering if the four white buttons toward the wrist could come in the way. I mean, doesn’t one find itself pushing them inadvertently, sometimes, if he let his wrist to rest on the device?

If I move my palm up far enough to touch the bottom buttons inadvertently, then my fingers are past the top of the device by almost 2 inches. The buttons also require a deliberate click,so light pressure is not inadvertently triggering their programmed functions.

Dont worry about that, a lot of thought and detail goes into the design, and when you start using it, you’ll see what i mean.

A Pro V2 has just been delivered to my place.
In the next week-end I will try it and then share my impression for others who might be interested.

I bought a Shuttle Pro back in 2006 and put it on the left side of my keyboard. Sped up my editing tremendously. I have an Express at work and the Pro at home. Wish I had the Pro in both places. It is a great tool and worth the money.

Hey Mike – like many whose contributions I’ve found online, I was suprised to find no button assignments for Audacity on the Contour. Did you finish that task for yourself? If so, could you export the file and send it this way to give me a kick-start? Actually, even better if you could put it up on this forum, as there are a few people looking. Ta.
