mp4 files – jagged edegs in sony vegas 11
I just bought a new laptop and had to reinstall sony vegas 11 on it.I installed the codec pack to read mp4 files- And it reads them fine and renders them fine.
However when I load my mp4 video files on to sony vegas it seems to decrease the quality of the file. When I change the previews screen to best the quality is still not good.
It has done this weird thing where the edges are all jagged and not smooth. However on my old laptop which is definitely an inferior model the sony vegas loads them in good quality and the edges are smooth. And this is when using the exact same files. I made sure the project properties were exactly the same as my old vegas.
The only thing that is different is the “frame” which you see under the video preview screen.
On my old sony vegas it is “1,376,095” and on my new computer with the reinstalled vegas it is “468,644.” Does this mean it has decreased the frame rate? I am not even sure what that means but maybe it has something to do with it.
I have no idea what is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Its a bit of a bummer. :/
edit: Ok I don’t know why but it seems to be back to normal..even though I did nothing. Weird But if anyone knows why the edges get jagged like that please tell me!

Right click on the preview window and uncheck/Deselect

Thanks it worked! My sony vegas won’t play mp4 files without one! Is there a better option? I see people mentioning that gspot program, but I thought that just told you what codec pack to install anyway.
Do you think these mp4 files are too big for sony vegas? they are around 2.07 gb for each file? I have five of them imported in sony vegas and it is really lagging in the preview window. Even on draft.
My laptop has 8gb of ram, and intel i7- and NVIDIA..so I’m not sure why it is still lagging.

As Steve said – never install a generic “Codec Pack” on an editing PC. Codec Packs are for gamers and usually very inferior to the codecs installed by Sony.
Sony Vegas should handle mP4 files without additional codecs. If you have an mp4 file that Vegas won’t open, then run gspot or mediaiinfo to see what codec was used to make the file.
If it says “xvid” or “divx” then realize that Vegas never worked well with xvid/divx files. Neither does Premiere, FCP or Avid.
Since you say the video is really lagging in preview, and it won’t play without a codec pack, then I’ll bet that the file is probably divx and the lagging preview is probably the fault of the codec having to encode every frame for display.

Thank you for all your replies. I got the files from my dvd’s since I have no idea how to download torrents. I ripped them using winx dvd platinum ripper and used these settings…
(to apple TV) – I know I didn’t want it for an apple tv, but was told it gave the best quality.
(640×480 MPEG4) Excellent quality
video quality: 2400 kbps
video frame rate: 23.97
CPU Core use: 2
video resolution: 1280:720So I was thinking maybe I was making the quality too high or something?
Yes I remember reading that sony does not like divx/xvid files which is why I switched to mp4 hoping it was not using that codec.
Its frustrating because it has taken me such a long time to find out the high quality ripping settings and then none of the files work smoothly on Sony Vegas. I can’t win!
I ran the file in GSPOT. It said
status: codec status undetermined
name: mpeg-4 video
Codec: mp4vOhhh it says

M4V: apple itunes video (.M4V) VIDEOI did not realize apple itunes had a different type of mp4 file for it. Dang.
It says Gspot can not yet capable of attempting to render this video type.
It has a lot of errors. I guess I need to convert the files gain. I just wish I could keep quality.
I am going to try Handbrake to convert the files again. It is using an ffmpeg codec. I looked online and it said to convert files to mp4 on handbrake and then convert them again to wmv using Any video converter. But hopefully I can just use handbrake. I guess i will need to go research that now and look up the best settings.

You can use Vegas itself to Rip your DVD’s. Then, you will

There is no need to do this. Just use File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc… in Vegas Pro. The video on a DVD is MPEG-2 which Vegas Pro handles quite well. You are loosing quality by converting it to MP4.
BTW, I would seriously consider uninstalling any codecpaks you have installed. They are guaranteed to mess up Vegas Pro.
