Wide screen question.
Hello. I’m in the process of converting some old 8mm reels to DVD. I am using a sony HD HDR-xr150 cam. I am projecting these old 8MM videos onto a white matte piece of smooth sheet rock and recording them with the Sony HD cam which is setup behind the projector. Kind of primitive, but its working lol. Here is the problem. The 8mm reels are being displayed in a 4:3 format. My sony cam records in HD 16:9 amd the cam corder screen is a wide screen as well. So its being recorded in wide screen format, but Im taping an images thats 4:3. Therefore when zoom in a bit to tighten up the picture, in my view finder, the top and bottom match up, but I have black space on the sides. If I Zoom in any more with the cam corder, i can fill my screen but I start loosing a lot of the video particulary top and bottom of video.
I then dump the video photage into my computer. Drag into son vegas timeline and have black space on the sides. I use the pan zoom crop tool (im using vegas 10 pro) to zoom in andcrop out the black on the sides, so I have a nice full picture. Its dispalyed in a square window in the sony preview window. I now want to make this video wide screen and burn it to DVD using Architect 5.0 without stretching or distorting the images in the video. The DVD wil be played on a wide screen 48″ TV. Is this possible to do ? Am I doing it all wrong ?
Everybody posts videos on youtube on how to make widescreen HD vids for ” youtube” but nobody really shows how to do it for making an actual DVD. Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Thank you. Gary -

Sounds like you used Pan Crop to get it back to 4:3 and now you want to go back to 16:9. You are going to end up with black bars on the side or lose content on the top and bottom, just like you saw when you recorded it. You could have Sony Vegas stretch it out, but that would not look good.

It’s being recorded with my HD cam corder in 16:9 but the image on the wall im recording thats being produced by the reel to reel 8mm is 4:3. So what I have now is recorded video that’s actually recorded in 16 :9, but its only showing as 4:3 because that’s how it’s displayed through the projector.(Black space on the sides) Anyway i can get it full screen without making it look stretched of distorted ?

Let me know what you expect. You cannot magically create the content that was at the sides, since it was never recorded.
Your options are:
#1. Display it in the original 4:3 content with the black bars filling the space on the sides.
#2. Severely crop the top and bottom to zoom in to get the sides.
#3. Shift the 4:3 video to one side and add you own commentary/content to the other side. Maybe use scrolling text to introduce the people in the film. That way it is not just wasted space with the black bars.
#4. Have the video stretch to fill the sides, but then objects in the film will appear wider than normal.

Mark.. suggestion #3 is a revelation!! I was in that situation a while back and never thought of that simple trick. Fortunately the project was put aside pending more background story.. so when it comes back for editing… heh heh…

I think you have one more option. I would have two video tracks. On the lower track I would add your 4:3 video and use the pan/crop tool to fill the entire 16:9 screen. Then I would add a blur to that track. Next i would add your same 4:3 video to the upper track. This presentation is used a lot in news broadcasts where they are showing SD video in a HD format. I think it works well!

Gentleman, thank you for all your input and advice ! As mentioned, the image really is being recorded in 16:9 but has black space on sides because im video recording a display thats broadcasted in 4:3. (When I play it back in sony vegas it says 720×480) I Cant zoom in with cam corder to fill up the screen because I start loosing top and bootom of videO. So what I was trying to do was make a 16:9 take up the full screen by loosing that black space thats there from recording a 4:3 image. I thought something with the pan zoom tool would do it but it Appears to be no way according from what Im reading in my post replys. Only way I guess is I do what Mark Barton suggests or I can try what Don mentioned. Don that method I may attempt. Thanks again all for the help !
