combining mismatched video formats
Hey guys,
I’m having an issue trying to put two different formats into one movie. I use my Canon camcorder which records at 1080-60i, and I want to splice in different angles recorded from my two GoPro2’s which I have set to record at 720-60 (I think it’s p).I would be happy with knocking the Canon down to 720 for this, it’s simply for personal use, and youtube, nothing serious (which is why I use my Canon and GoPro’s LOL). But when I set the properties in Vegas to 720-60 it really destroys the Canon clips, so I have to knock it down to 30, which really makes a dramatic difference with the GoPro clips. I just can’t seem to find a happy medium that looks decent.
Again, this isn’t for production, it’s just for myself, and my million youtube fans LOL, but I would like to keep it 720 minimum if possible. And I also want to keep the GoPro 720-60.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

What do you mean exactly by “destroy” the Canon clips? Can you post a screenshot or a sample clip? Is the Vegas output bad or is it just the youtube playback that has issues?
I have done test clips in Movie Studio Platinum 10 using 25i AVCHD and 50p GoPro type footage in a 720-50p project and both video types came out fine – no ghosting or noticeable quality loss.

Thank you Matt. I’m sorry I was vague. I meant yes, the Canon clips are ghosting badly, unacceptable. 1970’s 8mm looks better LOL.
I can play more with it and make some samples tonight (hopefully), it’s great to hear you’re able to do it, especially at 50p, so I should be able to do 30p or 60i shouldn’t I? (I’m not a pro here, if my terminology is off please feel free to correct me)

If your “properties” are set to HDV 1080-60i (1440×1080, 29.970 fps)
and you drop your go pro footage in there it all should look fine.
The GoPro 720-60 will give you wide screen but the resolution is a bit less than your 1080 but I don’t think it’s that noticeable.
The 60 number on your go pro means you shooting at 60 frames per second. That is excellent if you want to stretch out your video to a slower motion. There’s another mode on your GoPro that shoots at 120 frames per second which is even better if you want to slow the motion down if for instance you have surfing shots, etc.I’m not an expert on this so wait for some other opinions.
