  • Vegas Pro 11 crashing graphics drivers when rendering using certain codecs on Windows 8

I have been using the “MainConcept AVC/AAC Apple iPad/iPhone 4 720p30 Video” preset for ages, but when i upgraded to Windows 8 (the preview) and updated the drivers for my nVidia card Vegas started crashing them when i tried to render using it.

Not just crashing Vegas, but crashing the drivers making the whole screen go blank for a few seconds until Windows fixes it. After that, Vegas is stuck on the rendering screen at 0% and won’t cancel so i have to stop it using Task Manager.

It works fine with the “MainConcept MPEG-2 HDV 720-30p” but that produces huge file sizes and horrible render times.

Does anyone have an idea why Vegas is crashing my graphics drivers?
FYI, i’m using the nVidia GT 120 card with hardware acceleration turned off in Vegas with the latest drivers.

I suspect you will hear crickets from Vegas support until four things happen:

    a) Windows 8 is officially launched as a main stream product
    b) Sony endorses Windows 8 as a supported and tested platform for Vegas
    c) Nvidia releases official drivers for Windows 8
    d) Sony releases a Windows 8 update release for SVP 11 or new version i.e. version 12. In recent years, Sony has typically released major versions of SVP around about September or October of any given year.

Until then, any issues you experience are a case of caveat emptor.

On the plus side, at least your system is not blue screening :-). It sounds like the video driver is self-recovering.

As to why it is not rendering, it may be o/s related, or even CODEC related.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 11 (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

As Nigel pointed out it would be very difficult for anyone here to help since Windows 8 is not a supported platform. Consider yourself a very early “beta tester” and resign yourself to the fact that it simply doesn’t work and probably won’t work until Sony releases support for Windows 8.
