Looking to update camera and editing software
I am making simple marketing videos for a small business and have been using the equipment they had before I got here –
Sony Handycam HDR-SR11 and Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8
I just got a new work computer to edit on – Dell Optiplex 390, which has 3 Gigs of Ram on it right now. The old computer was really slow so I shot all video in sd.
After getting this new computer I shot some stuff in hd, but when I import these files to vegas, the program freezes up. I suggested getting more RAM to our IT guy, but he said it wouldn’t make any difference with the version of vegas I have.
I am not extremely tech-literate. I know how to use a camera and edit, but I need some advice on where to go from here.
If the issue is the editing program, what should I get that won’t break the bank? Can this camera be used with a different editing platform anyway? This guy said that we used vegas because of the proprietary format? I know this equipment is kind of old – what should I be using now so that I can film and edit in hd?

Just because you can shoot in HD doesn’t mean you can edit in it.
I looked up your computer and discovered that it can come with anything from a Celeron processor to a Core i5 so the first thing is to find out what kind of processor is in it.
Ideally it’s the i5 as anything less just isn’t suitable for editing the footage from your camera.
The second issue is that VMS Platinum is very old software.
It’s now at version 11 and that’s what you should be using.
It’s difficult to use old software to edit footage from a new camera as the new software has been optimized for the new (HD) footage.
The upgrade price is only $65 and it will be well worth it. -

I checked out my processor and it is an i5, luckily.
I would definitely upgrade to Vegas 11 for $65, I hadn’t even looked into it, but you can’t argue with that price.
The camera isn’t new, either. I believe it came out in 2008. I assume the camera is not the problem, though? Do you think that if I just upgrade to Vegas 11 the program will no longer freeze when I import a long (a minute or two) hd video file? -
I love those cameras! I have 3 of them, and for quick video you can’t go wrong. I only use them in the field now. I always shot and edited in HD, but I always had an i7 platform to do it on.
Turn off all your filters/plugins while editing and you should be ok.

That’s always the best way.
