AVI Problems.
Hello all. Before starting my post, I want to state two things. First, English is not my main language, so expect errors. Second, I know this question has been asked before, but the posts I could find are very old, and therefore for very old versions of vegas, that is why I’m asking.
So, my question is, how do I edit avi files in vegas? I mean, look at this video:

I record my video directly from my capture device (USB YPbPr capture device, EMPIA chipset) using VirtualDub software, with (latest) DivX codec. I also tried using x264, but the same thing happened, so I suppose the problem is the container (.AVI). I read many times that editing AVI files with vegas leads to big fail, but I have other AVI files that work (or at least seem to) fine. (Of course, the original video looks perfect)So, I guess there are two ways to fix this. Either finding some fix to make vegas properly work with AVI files, or, I could use another video capture program. Also I could use another video editing program but that’d be expensive.
So please, I’d like to know if there is a work-arround at all, or if you know another videocap program that lets me record in, for example, .TS container, or any other than AVI.

AVI is a container to put video from several different compressors, (movie camera, screen recorder, 3d program, etc.) These movies can be decompressed with an application such as a media player or editing program.
Vegas is a platform intended to edit videos and must first decompress the AVI it is given. DIVX is a codec made to deliver video. It was not intended to be a two-way street. If you could capture your video using a more edit friendly video codec, Vegas would be much more able to properly handle your files.
Some people think Vegas should be able to work with all video files. Sometimes it is like putting diesel fuel in a regular gas car. Both of them burn but only in the right machine.
I suggest you fine a new codec to record your videos. I don’t have screen capture experience, so I cannot help you there.

Hello, thanks for the quick reply.
I tried Lagarith codec as suggested somewhere in the net (don’t remember where) but files ar WAY too big.
I don’t mind (everything has a limit) big files, I have a lot of space now, but the problem is that I usually record like 3-4 hours of gameplay, and I think that would eat like 500Gb, and that is simply too large.I’ve been reading some more in the net, and found out that problem with AVI files in vegas (apart from the XviD/DivX problem) are that are usually compressed too much, and vegas don’t like that. I’m not recording my screen, I don’t play on PC. I play in a videogame console, the output (Y/Pb/Pr) splits in two and one output goes to my screen and another one to the USB capture card, if that helps.
BTW I should have said that the video contains some blood and violence scenes. Sorry.

Hello again,
I have been playing with the DivX encoder and a lower compression seem to solve the problem. The file size is like 30MB/minute which is really nice for the quality.
Anyways, I know there are better codecs for my purporse (editing the gameplay videos), so the answer is still “open”.

Hey again.
I think it can use a lot of codecs. Every codec I installed in my computer showed up in the video compression settings window, so I guess most codecs work. Just a guess, though.
So if you know a good codec for my purprose just tell me and I’ll tell you if it works 🙂

I have the same problem before glitches and pixelated output and solved these by rendering my projects to uncompressed avi.
Now i have the same problem again, Ive upgraded to Vegas 11 and I could not find the uncompressed AVI output setting, please help… -

As I stated above, what I did was to CAPTURE (not render) the video with VirtualDub using DivX on the lowest compression setting. Sony vegas does not work well with heavy-compressed videos.

Technically you did render, if there was any compression involved, it was done in real-time. Vegas works fine with heavily compressed video, like a low bitrate AVCHD. I tried to explain to you the difference between an editing codec and a delivery codec. DIVX and XVID were not meant to be edited.

Hello Jeff,
I understand what you said. I know DivX is not a good format to edit video. I said that vegas works better with less compressed videos because it did so, at least for me, but that is just my case, ie, capture program, codec settings, etc.
I don’t know if I said so but the video glitches also showed up in the vegas video view window, they didn’t appeared after rendering the video.

Try using Motion JPEG. It provides good interframe compression and edits easily in Vegas.
