“Project” settings under custom render settings
I’ve noticed recently that when you’re in your custom render settings, if you go to the “Project” tab on the lower right, you can choose “Video Rendering Quality”, which by default seems to always be “(Use Project Settings)”. Will this improve if I use “Best” instead of that?

This means that render template uses the video quality setting, which is specified in the Project Properties.
You can explicitly set it to Best (or Good) to override it. The difference between Good and Best is described in the help:“Unless you have specific performance problems, choose Good. Choosing Best can dramatically increase rendering times. Good uses bilinear scaling without integration, while Best uses bicubic scaling with integration. If you’re using high-resolution stills (or video) that will be scaled down to the final output size, choosing Best can prevent artifacts.”

Most people blindly set everything to the max when they render but this is not the best approach. Aleksey is right that “Best” is only needed when resizing high resolution images and will only make your renders take longer with no appreciable increase in quality otherwise.

I use “good” for all renders until I get to the final production stuff, i.e. when I’m testing for delivery, then I switch to “best” ’cause I’m sort of obsessive. I like to imagine that I can tell the difference in the quality when viewing BDs on my TV. It is subtle but can be observed.
But I’m also a focus-freak amateur astronomer who is known to still bang on the projection booth door at movies and demand that they tweak the focus!
