  • Can’t save templates

Posted by Nick White on March 29, 2012 at 1:20 am

I Customise a Template, and the little (*) appears next the name. I save the template and the (*) disappears, but then when I either Cancel or OK, the template appears as unsaved (*) in the templates list. If I again ask to customise, the template has the (*) next its name again in the customise DBox.

This has not always happened. I am not sure why or when it started.

Can anyone tell me why, please?

    Thanks for any help

I haven’t had that happen, but I have experienced a template just “disappearing after awhile”. I’ll work along for a month or so just fine, and my saved preset just won’t be available anymore…

hmmm..ok. Thanks…I think :)That’s encouraging. I value my presets, having worked hard to understand and get them right.

It’s become a bit weirder too. Some templates are saved if I cancel the render session. Others are saved if I save the project. Others are saved if I save the project then restart Vegas.

Just BTW, the templates are at
C:Users[UserName]AppDataRoamingSonyRender Templates for v11 (and I think older versions).

There are sub-folders for each genre. I am seeing that my templates _are_ being saved when I save them (File date shows it)

I am not sure how you get Vegas to re-link if the link is lost. But it may be worth having a look at that folder to see if you have really lost them, if it happens again..

hmmm…well so far I feel that I have provided more info than I have received regarding my question.

no dig at the one who did reply (although some communication regarding my attempts to helpo would be nice)…so yeah a dig. But surely SOMEBODY has some input about this.

Potential dumb question but I’ll ask it anyway.
Are you giving the new preset a different name before saving it?
If you are, then all I can suggest is reinstalling Vegas as something may have gotten corrupted.

    Thanks for the input.

I learned a long time ago that when somebody is asking for help, there is no such thing as a dumb question….on either side! 😀 Sometimes the most basic idea was missed.

Yes I am changing the name. I actually asked myself the same question. If I don’t change it there is an error message and I am not getting that. The (*) disappears as if the save had worked. But then it shows in the template list and if I reopen the template itself.

I will try a reinstall. Hopefully that does not lose me my (finally working) templates!

[Nick White] ” Hopefully that does not lose me my (finally working) templates!”

I’ve never had to reinstall but I’m pretty sure that doing so will wipe out any templates.
You need to find out where they’re stored and make a copy of them so that you can bring them back in.
The location depends on your OS and version of Vegas.
I’m running Pro 10 on XP Pro so if you’re on something else, I can’t help.

Well wow! I really thank you for the input.

I DID back up the templates! Cautious, me, I am! 😀

However when I tried to reinstall, I was told I had to uninstall Movie Studio first. I did. Then I reinstalled….and the templates were there anyway.

But I feel your advice to trace and back them up is a good one. It’s just a pity that I had to trawl the web to find the right folder. I feel that every programme should have to disclose all folders and stuff. It can lead to hacking and trouble, but so many programmes cause their own trouble and sometimes just knowing where files are can save so much.

And they seem to save better now. Still need to try a few, but we’ll see.

[Nick White] “I DID back up the templates! Cautious, me, I am! :D”

That’s called being smart, not cautious !!

[Nick White] “And they seem to save better now. Still need to try a few, but we’ll see.”

Hopefully doing this will get you back in the game with no further problems.
    Happy editing.
