I just got a brand new Nathalem Octocore 2.93 Mhz, 12G ram, Beast.
Right off the bat i installed iStat Menu, and loaded my meatiest After Effects project to test it out.

    1) First off istat showed 16 CPUs… (Ive heard this is normal due to “dual threads” on the new xeon chips)

    2) They seemed to all max out at the halfway spot… this also seemed to make sense.

    3) I tried flicking on the multiprocessor switch and instantly… AFX froze.

    4) I had to battle the program simply to turn this setting off without it crashing first…and eventually got it switched off…

    5) Now im noticing sporatic, at best, activity across the charts when i render… as if only one or two processors is working at a time…

Anybody have any similar experiences with a new computer or old????

Can someone tell me is it better to go Dual Xeon (4) or (8) cores or better to go with a single multicore CPU. Some mentioned that single multi core is better cause you can get more bang out of the system. If you have Dual Xeon (8) core running at or close to 3 gigs I would think that 48 cores would last a long time over upgrading your system every 2 years with single multicore chips?

UPDATE: Think i figured it out… as forewarned (sorta) on the multi processing preference… Ram settings need to be adjusted when multi processing is on…

Had to do turn down the RAM setting to a percentage that equaled 1/8 of available RAM…. aka 12Gb divided by 8 cores… this ends up being a really low percentage like 30% or so…. but now its FLYIN!

Sounds like you got it figured out, but make sure you leave a little Ram for the OS and any other apps you my have open while runnning AE.
