  • Quick Question about Monitors

Posted by Jim Lillis on February 13, 2012 at 5:01 pm

I have a question about Monitors that are used in the edit machines you guys/gals are using. Maybe it’s more of a survey.

How many use dual (or more) monitors on their editing computers?

What size monitors do you have hooked up?

Do you think that a single rather large (32″ class or 42″ class) would be better than 2 smaller class (24″ class) monitors.

That said, what type / kind of video cards are you using?

    Thanks

If it moves . . . Shoot it!

I have two editing stations. Both have three 21-inch LCD monitors. I can’t imagine working with less than two. Yes, I am spoiled.

I personally avoid Radeon because of a personal issue with drivers, and I have been very pleased with nVidia products. I only buy GeForce, made by nVidia, not the third-party cards that use the nVidia chips. This way I know that the drivers from nVidia will work with the card they made.

Do not put two cards by different manufacturers in the PC. It will work, but I like to avoid the risk of incompatible drivers. If you install two of the same display adapter cards in your PC, Windows on;y has one driver to deal with.

24″ for the time line and 32″ for the preview (I do a lot of multicam work). A single monitor with a tiny preview makes it hard to colour correct/grade and choose takes properly.

    I use a GTX 570.

My back up system uses a 21″ screen with a USB video adapter which I hook up to any HDMI display.

I did try once to hook up my system to my 46″ LCD TV, but had to sit at least 9 feet away!

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

Do you want to stay 8 bit or go 10 bit? Are you color profiling your monitors, are you using only computer monitors or a HDTV/broadcast monitor as well? It all depends. Most of my work is for the web, so 8 bit sRGB is fine for me. I added an Asus PA238 8bit monitor to my older Viewsonic vx2433wm 8bit, they do look different, but I do prefer the image on the Asus. If you update to a 10 bit monitor, then a 10 bit dual head card will be an additional expense as well.
