OK, I’ve decided I need a more powerful computer system.
    This is my current system:

    Vegas Pro
    Vesion 11.0 (build 511) 64 bit

    Operating System
    Platform: Windows 7
    Version: 6.01.7601 (Service Pack 1)

    Processor
    Class: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz
    Number of processors: 2

    Display
    Primary: 1680x1050x32

    Memory
    Physical memory: 4,095.5 MB

    NVidia Properties
    GeForce 7600 GT
    Driver version: 285.62

    I’ve created my first project (Internet 480-30p 4:3 (640×480, 29.970 fps)
I’ve discovered that the editing experience (being able to accurately see the results of my editing effects etc in real-time in the preview window) is almost like ‘flying blind’. Frames dropping out all over the place and it’s not until I render that I can accurately see the end result.

Its just way too time consuming … I like to use lots of effects and transitions (if need be) and just have an enjoyable creative experience (being primarily interested in making videos for the music I write i.e. 3 -4 minutes long) ….

I’ve had a bit a look around to try and gauge others’ experiences and what kind of systems they are using. Its seems to me (and remember I’m a complete newb) that when it comes to HD you can never have enough power!!! I’ve noted some members are using dual hex core Zeons and report they are happy. I really don’t want to spend that much money so I’m thinking maybe I should just stick to SD and have a good time with a more modest computer system.

Maybe someone might be able to point me in the right direction. Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Rob

I would highly recommend checking out the Videoguys.com DIY projects. The latest DIY9 is based on the new Sandy Bridge-E 6 core processor and it looks like a winner. This CPU is 1/2 the cost of the old Hex Cores ($599) and should be incredible for video editing. I’m thinking of building one myself to replace my 5 year old Quad Core. I might go with an Intel motherboard though.

Wow, thanks John – very much appreciated :):)
Looks like they will be doing some test builds in January some time.
Looks brilliant – makes we want to just ‘lay down’ the cash right now 🙂
