Advice on effect needed
Posted by Patty Loew on December 23, 2011 at 1:56 amHi, need some wizardry. I’m trying to move big block letters from right to left across the screen (I know how to do that) with video visible only within the letters (not the entire screen). Tried cookie cutter and the mask generator, but so far no luck. Any wizards out there who can help?

December 23, 2011 at 7:05 amDo you want the IN-Letter Video to “move” with the movement of the Letter? Or do you want the Letter to Pan across the video?

December 23, 2011 at 7:09 amHi Grazie, I’d like the video to move with the letter as it pans across the screen and the video only visible within the letter.

December 23, 2011 at 8:06 amHere’s a simple start for you:-
1] Track1 has the Video you wish to have within your Letter/s
2] Make a Track2 (T2) a “Child” of Track 1
3] Set T1 to “Multiple Mask” in its Track Header
4] Add a Media Generator Text Event to T2
Job Done!
Now, this WILL have your Video within the boundaries of your text, against a Black BG. If you wish, place “another” Video Event on a new video Track, T3. This will now become your Video BG for your Text-IN-Video Letters.
There’s much creativity to be had messing with the Track Header and its Compositing Modes – be warned!! It’s thoroughly addictive…..

December 23, 2011 at 9:12 amDid you read my outline? It’s in the reply below.
Use Parent Motion in Track1 Header. That’ll keep your Video SYNC-ed to the movement of your Letter’s movement.

February 4, 2012 at 3:23 pmGraham…a much belated THANK YOU for your excellent advice on the effect I was struggling with. I was able to get back to my project after a month of craziness. I followed the steps you outlined and got exactly the effect I was looking for. It looks GREAT. I’m still frustrated with the overall jumpiness of AVCHD video as I edit in Vegas 9 (I’m using a MacBook Pro with a dual platform and edit on the Windows 7 side). It looks fine after I render it, but oh, the dropped frames and jerkiness are maddening in video preview as I edit. If I upgrade to the latest version of Vegas, will that solve the problem? Again, thank you…THANK YOU for the compositing tips!
